Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake Gets Fresh Story Trailer

Square Enix unveils new Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D story trailer

Square Enix has unveiled a new trailer for Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, offering fans an in-depth look at how the origins of the legendary RPG series are being reimagined for a new generation. Developed by Artdink Corporation, the double remake combines two foundational Dragon Quest titles in one enhanced package, featuring updated visuals, expanded storylines, and fresh gameplay elements designed to modernize the experience while preserving its nostalgic appeal.

Rediscovering the origins of Erdrick's legacy

The trailer focuses on the intertwined stories of both Dragon Quest I and Dragon Quest II. The first title follows the descendant of the hero Erdrick, tasked with defeating the Dragonlord and restoring peace to the kingdom of Alefgard. The sequel shifts the focus to Erdrick's heirs, three royal descendants who must join forces to repel a new evil that threatens their world.

In this new version, the narrative has been expanded with additional dialogue, more cinematic storytelling, and deeper character interactions. Square Enix aims to give long-time fans new insights into familiar heroes and settings, while making the plot more engaging and accessible to new players.

Enhanced gameplay and new features

Beyond visual upgrades, Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake introduces a wealth of new content and gameplay improvements. Among the highlights is a brand-new underwater area known as the Ocean Floor, which debuts in Dragon Quest II and offers unique enemies, treasures, and lore. Players will also meet Matilda, the Princess of Cannock, a new playable character who joins the party with her own combat style and backstory.

The development team has also enhanced combat mechanics across both games. Dragon Quest I now allows the hero to face multiple enemies simultaneously, a feature absent from the original release. The remake also integrates into both titles the Sigil system, which was originally exclusive to Dragon Quest II, expanding strategic options in battle.

Additional features include the return of Mini Medals, the introduction of a Tombola mini-game for special rewards, and an overall increase in world-building depth and narrative scale. The script has been dramatically expanded, adding new dialogue and side quests that flesh out the lore of the Erdrick saga.

Striking HD-2D presentation

Using Square Enix's acclaimed HD-2D visual engine, which combines pixel-art characters with richly detailed environments and modern lighting, the remake delivers a cinematic look with a touch of nostalgia. This distinctive art style, seen previously in Octopath Traveler and Live A Live, enhances exploration and storytelling while staying true to the charm of the original 8-bit games. Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is a full reimagining designed to celebrate the origins of Dragon Quest while meeting the expectations of today's RPG audience.

The game will launch worldwide on October 30, 2025, for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. It aims to deliver the definitive version of the legendary Dragon Quest beginnings, honoring the series' history while charting a fresh path forward for one of gaming's most influential RPG franchises.
