MXGP 26 Brings Back an Authentic Motocross Experience
Motocross fans do not remember a race only by who crossed the finish line first. Sometimes what sticks with you is a rut deep enough to carry you through a corner, a clean scrub over the crest of a jump, or that brief moment when the rear tire slides before finding grip again. MXGP 26 - The Official Game seems to understand that appeal quite well. Rather than simply placing a new season on top of the old foundation, Artefacts Studio has rebuilt the physics, animations, and the way the terrain reacts to the bikes, bringing the experience back to one of the most fundamental parts of motocross: controlling a machine that is constantly fighting the ground beneath its wheels.
When the Track Is No Longer Just a Backdrop for the Race
MXGP 26 carries the official license for the 2026 season, featuring 19 tracks, riders from both MXGP and MX2, and 16 bikes. For fans who follow the championship in real life, simply returning to familiar circuits with official riders and machines already makes the experience feel closer to an actual MXGP season than a typical off-road racing game.
But the most interesting part is what happens beneath the tires.
The terrain in MXGP 26 changes from lap to lap. Bikes continuously carve deeper ruts into the track, reshaping the surface and meaning that the best racing line on the opening lap may no longer be the smartest choice several laps later. Hard pack, sand, and clay also behave differently, while dry and wet conditions further change how players search for grip. It forces you to treat the track as something that evolves during the race rather than simply memorizing one route and repeating it.
The game also lets players decide just how “serious” they want their motocross experience to be. Assists can keep things approachable at the Amateur level, but as you move closer to Expert and start turning those aids off, more layers of control come into play:
- take direct control of scrubs and whips in the air;
- choose when your rider stands or sits instead of letting the game handle everything automatically;
- shift the rider's weight to influence how the bike reacts;
- read the ruts and change your line as the track gets torn apart.
These details are where the passion behind MXGP 26 really starts to show. A good lap is not simply about holding the throttle open longer than everyone else. You need to know when to settle the bike, when to let it slide, and when a line that looks worse at first glance has actually become the faster option after dozens of tires have already passed through the same section.
The MXGP series has had periods where it was received quite well by the community, particularly around MXGP 2019, MXGP 2020, and MXGP 2021. Some reviewers even regarded 2020 or 2021 as high points of the Milestone era. MXGP 24, on the other hand, received a largely negative response on Steam, which makes MXGP 26's move to Unreal Engine 5, rewritten physics, and rebuilt terrain system feel like more than a routine yearly upgrade. It looks much more like an attempt to establish a new foundation for the series.
That does not mean the game already has everything. MXGP 26 does not feature a full Career Mode, with Championship currently serving more as a career-lite experience. If you're looking for a long and layered progression system like those found in racing games built heavily around career progression, that is not the game's strongest area right now.
For players who come to MXGP for motocross itself, however, the story is different. Grand Prix, Championship, Time Attack, The Compound, and Online provide enough room to practise, chase faster times, or simply keep riding until a section of track that once gave you trouble finally starts to feel smooth beneath the wheels.
