Funcom showcases Swordmaster class and more details about Dune: Awakening

Funcom keeps revealing details about its upcoming adventure and has published a new video focused on a combat-focused class in Dune: Awakening, the Swordmaster. The class, rooted in the legendary martial discipline of the Dune universe, is built for fluid, high-skill melee combat.

This reveal comes as part of Funcom's growing promotional push ahead of the game's release on June 10, 2025. With PC as the lead platform, versions of the game for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are expected to follow.

Set in an alternate timeline where Paul Atreides was never born, Dune: Awakening crafts a world torn out by a brutal civil war between House Atreides and House Harkonnen for the control of Spice. In the game, players step into the shoes of an agent tasked with uncovering the fate of the Fremen, the native people of Arrakis. The game blends survival mechanics with MMO progression, including base-building, resource harvesting, and a wide range of PvE and PvP challenges.

Uncovering the Landsraad

One of Dune: Awakening's most ambitious systems lies in its endgame: the Landsraad. This political system allows player guilds to align with one of the two major houses and lobby for control over Arrakis. Every week, guilds can influence votes among 25 lesser houses to determine which faction rules. The winning side earns server-wide power for the next week and can even enact far-reaching laws, some of which include dramatic consequences like full item loss in deep desert PvP battles.

The Landsraad is designed to reward not only warriors but also crafters, strategists, and guild leaders. It creates an evolving, player-driven endgame where politics, economy, and combat are deeply intertwined. According to Creative Director Joel Bylos, this structure aims to ensure that every player, regardless of playstyle, has a meaningful role in shaping the future of Arrakis.

With its fusion of survival elements, deep lore, and sandbox MMO features, Dune: Awakening is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious adaptations of Frank Herbert's universe to date.
