This Week's Video Game Releases - August 2025 (Week 34)

It’s a busy week for gamers, with new releases spanning serene journeys, high-octane shooters, and even cozy community sims. Whether you’re chasing mythical battles, leading adorable creatures, or undercutting rivals in a town’s only supermarket, there’s something dropping this week to suit nearly every mood.

August 18 - 24 releases

The wave of releases begins with Sword of the Sea on August 19. Created by Giant Squid, the studio behind Abzû and The Pathless, this meditative adventure trades swords for surfboards, or more precisely, a “hoversword.” Players ride across rolling landscapes, restore life to barren environments, and face colossal leviathans in a silent but poetic world that blends movement and exploration into a kind of moving meditation.

On the same day, Xbox players finally get their hands on Black Myth: Wukong, a game that first made waves back in August 2024. This action-RPG takes inspiration from Chinese mythology, pairing martial arts combat with fantastical storytelling and breathtaking visuals. While not a brand-new release, the arrival on Xbox Series X/S marks a fresh opportunity for console players to dive into its mythic world.

Moving into August 20, the pace accelerates with VOID/BREAKER, an indie roguelite FPS from Stubby Games. Known for fast reflexes and mind-bending mechanics, the studio leans into speed, destruction, and replayability. Every run is a chance to mod your weapons, smash through environments, and outrun enemy AI in a game that thrives on chaos.

Also slated for August 20 is Morbid Metal, a hack-and-slash roguelite published by Ubisoft. The hook lies in its shapeshifting combat system, letting players switch between four distinct fighters mid-battle to create stylish combos and relentless assaults. Although originally set for this week, Ubisoft recently announced a delay to fall 2025, giving the team extra time to polish. Still, the buzz around its unique combat loop is only growing.

Fans of over-the-top sports RPGs had circled August 21 for Inazuma Eleven: Victory Road, but they’ll need a little more patience. Level-5 officially shifted the release to November 13, 2025, ensuring the latest entry in the beloved anime-infused soccer saga is ready to shine when it finally lands later this year.

Filling the August 21 spot instead is Herdling, a calmer take on gaming that trades high-octane action for nurturing leadership. In this adventure from Okomotive, players guide a herd of whimsical creatures across scenic landscapes, solving environmental puzzles and keeping the group safe on their journey. Its focus on relaxation and discovery makes it one of the more heartwarming drops of the week.

Finally, Discounty rounds out the list on August 21. This quirky life-management game lets you run the town’s only supermarket, where choices go far beyond pricing and stock. From shaping community economics to stirring drama among townsfolk, your humble grocery empire can become the heart—or the chaos—of the neighborhood.
