Darkest Dungeon 2 coming in February 2023

Good news for fans of grimdark RPGs—developer Red Hook team has announced that they have set the month of February 2023 as Darkest Dungeon 2 release window for Epic Games Store and Steam. Console versions will follow after this window. 

Darkest Dungeon 2 has been out on early access since late 2021. After releasing the latest update, Shroud of the Deep, which gave the game tons of new content, it seems the developers are now ready to push for the full release. 

According to Red Hook, some of the things they need to work on include progression, character relationships, and, oddly enough, driving a stagecoach.

For progression, the developers have stated that they are aware of the shortcomings of the current XP/unlock progression system, stating it is “quite minimal and lacks enough meaningful choices.” They will overhaul the system to have a strong link with expeditions and center around a “compelling hub” where you can raise your abilities and even gain new gear. Likely this will come in the form of trainer characters and merchants who can improve your character over time.

Similarly, the team has acknowledged that relationships in Darkest Dungeon 2 are not as engaging as the first game’s mechanic. They will make changes to the system, aiming to do the following:

• Bring back some tension and surprise
• Add more meaningful choice into the system
• Make the benefits (and drawbacks) of relationships more active and tactical (less of a spectator sport)
• Remove some of the combat clutter and interruptions

The team also promises enhancements to the stagecoach driving sequences, which were intended to emulate the walking sequences in the first game. Their aim is to add  “decision-making layers” to the journey.

Apart from all this, they also plan to add more enriching art to the current set of regions, as well as mini-bosses that can show up anywhere. Be ready for 3-slot Cultist Exemplars, the return of the Collector, and another unannounced monster.
