Darkest Dungeon 2 is coming

Red Hook Studios have announced a sequel to the critically-acclaimed role-playing game Darkest Dungeon. They have published a teaser that shows a group formed by the well-known heroes that survived to the nightmarish events in the original game. This time they seem to be moving to a new and terrifying location, the Howling End.

The previous Darkest Dungeon is a very popular side-scroll gothic adventure in 2D with turn-based combat. On it, you control a group of heroes that are helping you to reclaim the states that you have inherited from your ancestors. The place is overrun by monsters of all types and corruption. Nothing new at this point, but then the game manages to make use from quite original mechanics to hook you with gameplay that differs a lot from what you are used to see on any other RPG.

The heroes are expendable, and you can recruit more of them anytime. Once they get to explore the different dungeons that you can find in the game, they will have to deal with horrific creatures and events that not only will have an impact on their health but will also plague their minds with unbearable stress and mental afflictions of all types. Getting them equipped and sane enough to face the monstrosities in the place is not an easy task at all, and that's one the most attractive thing of the game, its difficulty.

After the original release, a few DLCs were added to the game. The Crimson Court featured vampire-like creatures and a new blood-related mechanic; The Color of Madness introduced a gauntlet type of event where you face waves of enemies and bosses to earn a new currency that allows you to buy very powerful items. Some new heroes were also added as part of those or on separate DLCs. We are not sure yet of what type of perilous creatures we will have to face in Darkest Dungeon 2, but we can recognize some of the heroes from the previous installment in the teaser (Plague Doctor, Man-at-Arms, Hellion, Highwayman, Leper, and Grave Robber).

We expect a lot of surprises in the new game since Red Hook Studios have already unveiled that the game mechanics have been tuned up and that they are working hard to make the metagame quite different to the one in the previous game. There is no launch date announced for Darkest Dungeon 2 yet, but we expect to see it on Early Access soon.
