Leaks Fuel Excitement for Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remake
The gaming community is abuzz with speculation following a series of leaks suggesting that The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is being remade, potentially for a surprise release in April 2025. While Bethesda remains tight-lipped, the evidence, ranging from accidental website postings to insider whispers, paints a compelling picture of a modernized return to Cyrodiil.
The earliest hint of an Oblivion remake surfaced in 2020 during a leaked Microsoft document from the FTC vs. Microsoft case, which listed an Oblivion remaster slated for FY2022. Though that timeline didn’t materialize, the project gained traction in 2023 when a former employee of Virtuos Games, the studio behind ports like Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster, confirmed development. The leak revealed that the remake would leverage Unreal Engine 5 for stunning visuals while retaining elements of Bethesda’s Creation Engine to preserve the original’s essence. This blend suggests a full remake rather than a simple remaster, with modernized mechanics to appeal to today’s players.
Major leaks came out during a short period of time
In early April 2025, the leaks escalated dramatically. Virtuos inadvertently published assets on its website, including comparison screenshots showcasing the remake’s enhanced graphics next to the 2006 original, trailer snippets, and details of a physical deluxe edition. These were swiftly removed, but not before fans on platforms like Reddit and Imgur preserved and shared them widely. The screenshots highlighted revamped environments and character models, while leaked details described gameplay updates: a Soulslike-inspired blocking system, refined archery for both first- and third-person views, a highlighted stealth interface, and a redesigned HUD for accessibility. The remake is also said to include the Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles expansions, mirroring Skyrim Special Edition’s approach.
Adding to the frenzy, the Steam page for Oblivion: Game of the Year Edition was updated in April 2025, with old trailers removed, a move some interpret as preparation for a new announcement. Insiders like Jeff Grubb have fueled speculation of a shadow drop, possibly the week of April 21, following the Elder Scrolls Online anniversary. However, Bethesda’s response to inquiries, “We have no official information on an Oblivion remake”, keeps the project in limbo.
These leaks, while unconfirmed, have ignited hope for a revitalized Oblivion. With Virtuos’ track record and Unreal Engine 5’s power, the remake could redefine a classic, if Bethesda finally breaks its silence.
