In Final Fantasy XIII Lightning Returns, five hundred years after the events of Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIII-2, Lightning awakens in a set of isles called Nova Chrysalia, the remains of the previous world of Gran Pulse that was consumed when Chaos was released, to discover that thirteen days is the time left until everything is destroyed. She is tasked by the gods to save mankind and lead them into a new world, and her sister will be resurrected as a reward.

You will play the game as Lightning through a third-person view. As the typical RPG, your character will improve as she progresses through the main story by doing quests and side missions. The game brings in some major changes tho. Combat is action-based and you control a single character instead of a party like in previous games.

The time limit to complete your adventure and save the world is always present. One day of in-game time equals an hour of gameplay, but the time will be stopped during combat, cutscenes, and at certain places. You will be able to collect Eradia when completing quests and then give it to the Yggdrasil tree to extend the gameplay time.

The encounters work like previous titles. They will be visible on the open field and can be engaged or avoided. Once you kill all enemies of a certain type in an area, a boss of that type will appear. The enemies get progressively more powerful as time passes.

Combat works under the Style-Change Active Time Battle System. You can wear different customizable outfits, each with a separate ATB gauge, that will give you access to different actions. You will use sword attacks for close combat and magic attacks for ranged combat mainly.

When you attack, your ATB is consumed and you will have to swap outfits to keep attacking. The ATB meter of an outfit recovers with time when it is not being used. Also when you land an attack you earn energy that can be used to unleash special attacks.

If you die or fell from combat an hour of in-game time is lost.

There are four main areas that you will be able to explore at will, connected by a monorail:

Luxerion, a gothic city ruled by an organization devoted to the god Bhunivelze.

Yusnaan. Snow, the Patron, rules this city where people are celebrating, indulging in their every desire before the world ends.

Dead Dunes, a huge desert with old ruins that are said to contain a powerful holy relic.

The Wildlands, a wild territory full of beasts and tainted by Chaos influence.
