Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo is a vibrant 2D top-down platformer blending Zelda-like exploration with metroidvania elements, set in a sprawling, retro-styled urban landscape. Players control Pippit, a yoyo-wielding bat and self-proclaimed master, navigating a city controlled by rival crime families to restore his influential Pipistrello family’s legacy. The narrative, laced with corporate shenanigans, follows Pippit and his aunt, Madame Pipistrello, as they counter a plot to seize their electricity monopoly, sparked by a soul-stealing mega-laser.
Gameplay centers on Pippit’s versatile yoyo, used for combat, puzzle-solving, and traversal. Over six unique yoyo tricks, like ricocheting off angled walls or “walking the dog” to cross gaps, enable creative parkour routes through the city’s four districts, spanning over 1,000 screens of secrets and challenges. Six special yoyo attacks, from multi-hit combos to bouncing strikes, help battle four crime bosses and their minions in caged combat arenas. Environmental interaction is key—hitting switches, grabbing distant items, or using traps adds depth to exploration and fights.
Customization shines with over 40 equippable Badges, altering gameplay with buffs like enhanced speed or attack power, and 20 passive Upgrades from a shady loan shark, boosting Pippit’s abilities. Players can collect over 80 items, from health upgrades to treasures, encouraging thorough exploration of shopping districts, industrial zones, and geek conventions. Puzzles, often with multiple solutions, range from activating platforms to navigating labyrinthine boss lairs. The pixel-art visuals, evoking Game Boy Advance classics, pair with a nostalgic soundtrack and a Game Boy-inspired opening. With fluid controls, a lighthearted story, and replayable challenges, Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo delivers a charming, action-packed adventure for fans of retro platformers.
