Developed by Rock Pocket Games and published by Funcom, this game is set to release for PC, Xbox One and PS4 this Halloween, 31 October 2019. The title exists in the same universe as the earlier Secret World Legends, but you don't need to have played that game previously.

This first-person cosmic-horror-psychological game mixes Mars exploration with Lovecraft. You play as Shane Newehart, a technician stationed at the Invictus, a secret research base built by the Orochi group. Your low-security clearance means you are completely unaware of the existence of a mysterious, intelligent signal that has been detected as coming from the red planet... Soon you discover strange and unusual setbacks. Crucial systems are malfunctioning, the greenhouse is filled with a strange mist and the rest of your team has yet to return from their EVA mission. You begin seeing and hearing things that aren’t there. Visions, hallucinations – or is that even what it is? Is this real… or are you slowly descending into madness?

Moons of Madness puts a unique spin on the madness theme with the zone-out mechanic. A zone-out is a hallucination comprised of combined events from Shane’s past, things that will happen in the future, and information about things that should be impossible for him to know. These events bend the player’s perception of reality by making them question what was a hallucination and what was real. Through this innovative mechanic, players can explore Shane’s subconscious and discover background details of the characters and game world.

    FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

How does the oxygen mechanic influence exploration within the Martian base and the surrounding environment?
Oxygen levels dictate how far you can explore. Low oxygen triggers a visual and auditory warning, ultimately leading to death if not addressed, forcing strategic resource management and route planning.
Explain the significance of the 'sanity' meter and the visual/auditory hallucinations encountered.
The sanity meter reflects your character's psychological state. Low sanity induces increasingly unsettling hallucinations, impacting your perception of the environment and the puzzles, creating a sense of paranoia.
Describe the function of the various environmental instruments (e.g., oxygen tank, helmet, etc.) and their role in survival.
These instruments are essential for survival on Mars. Oxygen tanks provide breathable air, while specialized suits and helmets offer protection against hazardous environments and the vacuum of space, allowing progression.
How do the game's puzzle mechanics incorporate the scientific tools and equipment available within the base?
Puzzles often require the use of scientific instruments to analyze data, manipulate machinery, or decipher clues. The player must understand how these tools function to progress.
Detail the role of the 'visions' or 'flashbacks' experienced by the protagonist and their impact on the narrative.
Visions offer cryptic clues and reveal fragments of the story, connecting the protagonist's past with the events on Mars. These visions provide narrative context and shape the player's understanding of the situation.
Explain the interplay between the base's electrical systems and the player's ability to navigate and solve puzzles.
Many puzzles revolve around the base's electrical systems. Power outages and system failures create challenges, requiring the player to restore power, reroute circuits, and utilize alternative energy sources to proceed.
How does the game's sound design amplify the horror and suspense experienced by the player?
The sound design uses ambient noises, unsettling whispers, and distorted soundscapes to create an atmosphere of dread and unease. The audio cues are crucial for detecting threats and building tension.
Describe the nature of the cosmic horror elements, and how they manifest within the game's environment and story.
Cosmic horror is integrated through alien artifacts, otherworldly entities, and the exploration of unsettling concepts. These elements manifest through visual distortions, environmental anomalies, and narrative reveals.
How does the limited inventory system influence resource management and the player's strategic decision-making?
The limited inventory forces the player to prioritize items, choose what to carry, and plan their routes. This creates tension by requiring players to make difficult choices on which tools to bring and what to leave behind.
Detail the method by which the player interacts with the environment (e.g., opening doors, manipulating objects), and any constraints that are placed on these interactions.
Players interact with the world through contextual interactions, such as examining objects, opening doors, or activating mechanisms. These interactions are often constrained by environmental factors like power outages or the need for specific tools.
