Released late 2016, Civilization VI, sixth installment of the famous turn-based strategy game license, has released a number of minor patches and DLC. Firaxis has released today a major expansion, Rise and Fall, with a plethora of new content, detailed below.

    • A new system of golden ages, which also includes dark ages, allowing the player to take on challenges and win both bonuses and penalties. If you come out triumphant from a dark age, you will obtain a golden age even more interesting thereafter.
    • Loyalty will become a key component in Rise and Fall. Every city now has its own allegiance to your leader. You will have to be careful to maintain a certain balance in all your colonies, on risk of seeing them offer their loyalty to one of your opponents.
    • You will now be able to recruit governors for your cities. They will allow you to maintain the loyalty of your population, but also to give bonuses and specializations to your cities.
    • The alliance system has also been improved, and proposes new diplomatic choices.
    • A timeline allows you to easily track the progress and history of your civilization.
    • Rise and Fall also lets you discover 8 new civilizations and 9 new leaders, with, of course, units, buildings, and improvements of their own.
    • With Rise and Fall you will also discover 8 new wonders, 7 new natural wonders, 2 new improvements, 2 new neighborhoods, 14 new buildings and 3 new resources.
    • Finally, new doctrines have been added to allow you greater freedom in your political choices.

    FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Loyalty mechanic impact city growth and stability in Rise and Fall?
Loyalty determines a city's allegiance to its owner. Low loyalty can lead to reduced yields, the loss of districts, and even city flipping to a rival civilization or becoming a Free City, severely hindering your empire's expansion and strategic control.
What are Dark Ages and how do they affect gameplay in Civilization VI: Rise and Fall?
Dark Ages occur when a civilization's Era Score falls below a certain threshold. During a Dark Age, your cities suffer significant loyalty penalties, and unique policy cards become available that offer both drawbacks and powerful bonuses, forcing difficult strategic choices.
Explain the concept of Golden Ages in the context of the game.
Golden Ages are periods of prosperity achieved by accumulating enough Era Score. They grant significant bonuses to your civilization, such as increased loyalty pressure in your cities and powerful bonuses based on your chosen Golden Age dedication.
What are Free Cities, and how do they emerge and behave?
Free Cities are independent city-states that arise due to low Loyalty. They can be conquered, or you can exert influence to make them join your empire. They can also pose significant military threats to your borders.
How do Governors provide their benefits?
Governors are unique characters assigned to cities. They offer a variety of powerful bonuses and promotions that enhance city development, production, loyalty, and resource acquisition, providing a significant edge.
How do you trigger the 'Historical Moment' events to generate Era Score?
Historical Moments are specific in-game achievements tied to various actions like discovering a natural wonder, constructing a specific building, or meeting certain milestones, which contribute to your Era Score and influence your civilization's age.
How can I maximize the benefits of my civilization's Era?
By carefully planning your actions, achieving Historical Moments, and choosing appropriate Dedications during Golden or Dark Ages, you can leverage your current era's unique benefits and shape your civilization's destiny.
What is the relationship between Era Score and a civilization's overall progress?
Era Score is the metric used to gauge the progress of your civilization through different eras. Accumulating enough Era Score allows you to advance to a new era, triggering Golden or Dark Ages, which significantly influence the gameplay experience.
How do Alliances work in the context of this expansion?
Alliances provide bonuses such as shared vision, science, culture, and military strength. The type of alliance determines the specific bonuses granted, with some alliance types granting a very significant advantage, so it is important to be strategic with their selection.
How does the 'Emergency' system affect gameplay?
Emergencies are global events triggered by major incidents like city captures or natural disasters. Participating civilizations can earn rewards by assisting in the emergency, which offers a chance to mitigate damage and possibly gain a temporary advantage.
