Forget saving the world as a hero, Yerba Buena starts you as an NPC
Yerba Buena has one of those premises that immediately makes you stop and go, alright, I need to see where this is going. Instead of putting you in the boots of some chosen hero, the game throws you into the life of Barb, a young woman living as an NPC inside an abandoned game world inspired by 1970s San Francisco. That alone gives the whole thing a weird, cool flavor. You are not just exploring a city; you are moving through a place that feels like it has been left behind, half broken, half alive, and full of strange rules waiting to be messed with.
The story follows Barb as she gets pulled out of her background-character life and into something much bigger. A dangerous biker gang, a spreading glitch, and a sinister threat hanging over the city push her into the spotlight. It is a fun idea because the game plays with that feeling of being trapped inside someone else’s system, then slowly learning how to break it. There is a nice underdog energy here, with Barb going from another face in the crowd to the one person who might actually save the whole place.
The Oscillator turns every puzzle into a playground
Where Yerba Buena really gets interesting, though, is its gameplay hook. The main mechanic revolves around the Oscillator, a strange device that lets you copy and paste physical properties from one object to another. So instead of just pushing boxes around or finding keys, you start bending the world itself. A normal object can suddenly bounce like a trampoline. A wall can stop behaving like a wall. The city becomes a giant puzzle box where the rules are flexible, and that is where the game finds its identity.
It is easy to compare Yerba Buena to something like Portal, not because it copies it, but because both games are built around one smart tool that completely changes how you look at space, movement, and problem solving. Portal had the portal gun. Yerba Buena has the Oscillator. Same kind of brain-scratching joy, but with its own weird personality.
Player reception has been great so far, especially from people who enjoy clever puzzle games that try something different instead of playing it safe. The setting, the story, and the copy-paste mechanic give it a strong hook from the start.
