John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando is a fast-paced, co-operative first-person shooter that combines explosive action, horror influences, and dark humor. Developed by Saber Interactive and published by Focus Entertainment, the game is crafted in close collaboration with legendary filmmaker John Carpenter, who contributes both narrative direction and an original musical score that sets the tone for its apocalyptic world.

Set in the near future, the story begins when a bold attempt to harness energy from the Earth’s core spirals out of control. The disaster awakens a malevolent entity known as the Sludge God, whose corruption spreads rapidly, transforming the environment and unleashing hordes of undead creatures. With civilization on the brink of collapse, a mismatched squad of mercenaries, the Toxic Commandos, is assembled to contain the outbreak and reclaim what remains of the world.

Players can face the chaos alone or team up with up to three others in online co-op with full cross-platform play. Each mission emphasizes coordination and adaptability as squads fight through dense enemy swarms, revive fallen teammates, and manage resources under constant pressure. Combat is intense and over-the-top, featuring a wide range of firearms, melee weapons, explosives, and character abilities designed to keep the action relentless.

Vehicles add another layer of strategy and spectacle. From heavily armored transports to combat vehicles equipped with mounted weapons, players can use mobility and firepower to plow through enemies, reposition quickly, or escape overwhelming situations. Environments are semi-open and encourage creative approaches to combat, blending close-quarters firefights with large-scale encounters.

Powered by Saber’s Swarm Engine, John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando delivers massive enemy counts, visceral action, and a distinctive tone inspired by classic genre cinema. With its blend of cooperative gameplay, stylized horror, and signature soundtrack, the game offers a bold and chaotic shooter experience for players looking to survive the end of the world together.

Having John Carpenter’s narrative direction and an original synth score gives this co-op shooter an incredible 80s horror vibe that sets it apart from generic zombie games. The Swarm Engine does a fantastic job handling massive enemy counts, making the combat feel genuinely frantic and satisfying when you're mowing down hordes with heavy weaponry or plowing through them in armored vehicles. On the downside, the semi-open missions can occasionally feel like a repetitive cycle of driving to an objective, defending a point from a swarm, and moving on, which might get stale if you aren't playing with a coordinated squad. It’s a loud, gory, and chaotic tribute to classic B-movies, but it heavily relies on having a good group of friends to keep the loop engaging.
