Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV arrives next September
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV is officially set to launch on September 17, bringing the legendary RTS franchise back to PC after years of speculation and anticipation from fans. The announcement was accompanied by new details about the game’s structure, multiplayer plans, and long-term support strategy, signaling an ambitious new chapter for the series.
New gameplay modes and more
One of the biggest novelties in Dawn of War IV is the return of Crusade Mode, a persistent campaign system inspired by the modern tabletop Warhammer 40K experience. Rather than isolated battles, players will guide armies through connected operations where units gain experience, unlock upgrades, and carry permanent scars from previous encounters. The mode is designed to create a more personal and evolving army progression system, encouraging long-term play beyond the main story campaign.
At launch, the game will feature four playable factions: the Space Marines, Orks, Necrons, and Adeptus Mechanicus. Developers have confirmed that classic base-building and large-scale warfare will once again play a central role, marking a return to the strategic gameplay style that made the original Dawn of War titles so popular. Cooperative missions, Skirmish matches, and the return of the Last Stand survival mode are also included in the package.
The campaign takes players back to Kronus, the iconic world first seen in Dark Crusade. Set centuries after the earlier conflicts, the new storyline revolves around an awakening Necron threat buried beneath the planet's surface. Multiple factions are drawn into the conflict as the war escalates across the devastated world.
Ambitious post-launch plans
The studio has also outlined extensive post-launch support plans. Seasonal updates are expected to add new maps, fresh Crusade content, gameplay balance changes, and additional cosmetic rewards. Developers have also teased the arrival of entirely new factions after release, although specific details have not yet been confirmed.
A larger expansion is currently planned for 2027 and is expected to introduce additional campaign chapters alongside major multiplayer content updates. The development team says community feedback will play a major role in shaping the game's future updates and balancing decisions after launch.
Following the announcement, reaction from longtime RTS fans has been overwhelmingly positive, particularly among players eager to see Dawn of War return to its classic large-scale warfare roots. With Crusade Mode adding a new layer of progression and ongoing support already mapped out, Dawn of War IV is shaping up to be one of the biggest strategy releases of the year.
