Slay the Spire 2 plans on expanding with new gameplay modes and more

Slay the Spire 2 will expand with new characters and experimental modes
Updates & Patches Early access

The developers of Slay the Spire 2 have shared new insights into the game’s future, confirming that additional characters and several new gameplay modes are currently in development. These updates are part of the studio’s broader early access strategy, which focuses on iteration and player feedback.

A game that's still in the making

According to Mega Crit co-founder Casey Yano, the team is actively working on introducing at least one new playable character, with the possibility of more. The initial roster was intentionally designed to be approachable, giving players a clear understanding of core mechanics. Future characters, however, are expected to introduce more intricate systems and playstyles, potentially adding greater depth and variety to the game.

Alongside new characters, the developers are experimenting with multiple gameplay modes aimed at reshaping how players experience the game. While still in early stages, three concepts have been outlined:

  • Competitive mode: A more intense, skill-driven format designed for players seeking a higher level of challenge and replayability
  • Short-run mode: A streamlined version of the traditional experience, allowing for faster sessions without sacrificing core mechanics
  • Social or multiplayer-inspired mode: An experimental concept that could introduce new forms of interaction between players, potentially expanding beyond the current cooperative features

These ideas reflect the studio’s willingness to explore different directions with Slay the Spire 2, even if not all of them make it into the final version. The developers emphasized that experimentation is central to their approach, and features may evolve or even be discarded based on testing and community response.

No release dates have been confirmed for these additions, but the ongoing updates signal a clear intention to significantly broaden the scope of Slay the Spire 2. The game is already a big hit after its release on Early Access, supported by the oustanding popularity of its predecessor, Slay the Spire, which probably is the most important deckbuilding video game released in recent years. As development continues, players can expect a mix of familiar deckbuilding gameplay alongside new systems that push the formula in unexpected directions.

Can't wait to see what they're working on! I wasn't expecting a coop mode at all, and it turned out great, so a competitive mode would be pretty interesting to see! I imagine it might take a while and might only be ready for the 1.0 release after they lock down the balance.

Add, evolve, transform: these were the three watchwords underlying Slay the Spire 2, a sequel that chose to remain firmly anchored to the golden formula of Mega Crit while building layer upon layer of depth. There are five playable classes, two of which are completely new, dozens of new cards, new items, and new archetypes for returning ones, and the Spire has been completely transformed, welcoming mysterious Ancients, insane special events, and hordes of ruthless opponents eager to brutally bring down the most promising matches. Among the most notable new features are the presence of cooperative multiplayer, the introduction of the Spire Timeline and the resulting structured worldbuilding, as well as the promised variety of alternate biomes, likely destined to grow even further in future iterations.

The new characters and experimental modes seem like they will make the game much more interesting in the long run. The competitive and fast-paced mode ideas are especially exciting.

Mouais,...

I guess they've added different modes so it doesn't look too much like the first one, right? Otherwise it would look like the same game to me

Anything that includes game modes and multiplayer is great. It gives more variety when it comes to enjoying a game.

The multiplayer is a blast. The only downside I can take away from this is on a visual level, because in order to see my partner's statuses I have to hover my mouse over them. I would love to be able to see his life and statuses under his character, just like I see mine.

In addition to the game modes, there is a good modding community which makes the game a lot of ways to play it, especially if you have friends.

I'm really intrigued by the co-op mode in Slay the Spire 2, the kind of addition that can bring a whole new dimension to the game and renew the experience. That said, I'd prefer to wait for the final version before jumping in, so as to enjoy complete, well-balanced content right from the start. I've only played the first Slay the Spire, but given how well it was done, I'm bound to be curious about this sequel. And from what I've seen, feedback on early access has been very positive, which is reassuring for further development.
