Rushing Beat was a hit side scroll beat-'em-up series by Jaleco on the Super Famicom (SNES) in the early 90s. The game's fate was blurred in the West due to disjointed title changes and fragmented storylines, which led many players to not realize they were part of a single trilogy. After more than 30 years of silence, the series has officially returned with the latest title called Rushing Beat X: Return of Brawl Brothers.
Rushing Beat X: Return of Brawl Brothers is the newest chapter in the franchise, serving as the "missing link" that connects the plots of the original trilogy (known in the West as Rival Turf!, Brawl Brothers, and The Peace Keepers). Released on March 19, 2026, and developed by City Connection (the current rights holder of Jaleco's IPs), the game promises to evoke deep nostalgia for the series's long-time fans.
The game is set in Neo-Cisco, a city under threat from criminal organizations, the deadly Zeekus virus, and "Cyber Clones." Players step into the shoes of brave fighters to track down the mastermind behind the chaos.
In this installment, players can control at least 6 characters, including:
Rick Norton: A former detective with a balanced fighting style utilizing punches, kicks, and throws.
Douglas Bild: A former professional wrestler turned police officer, specializing in powerful grappling moves.
Kahlua: An amnesiac young woman with a fast, agile playstyle focused on aerial combat.
Kazan: A descendant of the Togakure ninjutsu clan, featuring extreme speed and a triple-jump ability.
Beyond the roster, the developers have introduced several standout features. First, the game supports "auto-combo" for beginners (activated by holding the attack button), similar to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge or Streets of Rage 4. However, advanced players can still craft their own custom combos by combining directional inputs, parries, and various weapons for unique and creative gameplay.
In this new version, rather than being locked into an animation—which can break the combat flow—most actions can be canceled by dashing or jumping. This allows players to maintain constant pressure on enemies and string together seamless chains of combos.
When the rage meter is full, characters enter a "Rage Burst" state, whichsignificantly increases damage and enables a special finishing move called "Beat Rush." Furthermore, players can throw enemies into the background to destroy hidden objects and uncover support items.
At various checkpoints, you'll find "Tuff E Nuff" mobile food trucks. Here, you can combine collected ingredients to craft healing meals or gain special status buffs.
With a total of 9 main stages—ranging from shopping malls and slums to high-tech laboratories—alongside side missions featuring unique challenges and mechanics, Rushing Beat X: Return of Brawl Brothers promises to deliver the nostalgic feel of old-school arcades enhanced by modern graphics and combat systems.
