"Not a Soulslike": Phantom Blade Zero sets new genre path
In today’s gaming landscape, any dark, stylish action game with stamina bars and big bosses often gets labeled a “Soulslike.” It’s no surprise—FromSoftware’s Dark Souls and Elden Ring have carved a genre-defining path that has inspired developers worldwide. But this trend has also led to a flood of comparisons that sometimes overlook each game’s unique identity. Phantom Blade Zero is the latest title to push back against that trend.
Developed by S-Game, Phantom Blade Zero has drawn attention for its fast-paced, cinematic swordplay and intricate, martial arts-inspired animation. Early trailers showcased intense melee combat and moody environments that naturally drew comparisons to the Souls formula. However, according to Soulframe Liang, CEO of S-Game, those comparisons don’t tell the whole story.
Phantom Blade Zero Will Be Its Own Genre
In a recent post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Liang stated that the game is “neither a Soulslike nor a traditional action game,” aiming instead to forge its own identity within what they call the "Wuxia Action Game" genre.
So What Is Phantom Blade Zero?

Liang notes that after showcasing gameplay, some viewers instead likened the game to hack-and-slash titles like Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden—a sign that its style resists easy categorization. Rather than fitting neatly into a box, Phantom Blade Zero seems to borrow elements from multiple genres, blending fluid animation, fast action, and RPG mechanics.
This push for uniqueness mirrors recent hits like Lies of P, which infused the Souls formula with a twisted Pinocchio narrative and mechanical customization, or Black Myth: Wukong, which draws from Chinese mythology while delivering high-octane action that sets it apart from its peers. While these games all tap into the challenge and rhythm that fans love about Soulslikes, they’re also forging distinct paths with original settings, mechanics, and storytelling.
Though there’s still no release date for Phantom Blade Zero, anticipation is growing. If early footage and the developer’s intent are anything to go by, this might be one of the few games that walks confidently outside the shadows of giants—carving its own name into the action genre.
