The Future of Final Fantasy Tactics Hinges on a Remaster
With the release of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles just weeks away, Square Enix is putting more than nostalgia on the line. According to game director Kazutoyo Maehiro, the commercial performance of this long-awaited remaster could directly influence whether the Tactics series receives new life in the future.
A franchise with potential for more
Maehiro, who has been closely tied to the world of Ivalice since the original's launch in 1997, recently hinted that strong sales would not only validate the project but could also pave the way for revisiting other entries in this franchise inspited by Final Fantasy. That includes the Game Boy Advance spin-offs Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and A2: Grimoire of the Rift, or even the possibility of an entirely new sequel.
“If The Ivalice Chronicles performs well, it proves there’s still a real appetite for tactical RPGs,” Maehiro explained in a recent interview. “That success could open doors to projects like Advance, A2, or perhaps something completely new in the Tactics line.”
The remaster itself is positioned as something more than a simple upgrade. Described by the development team as a blend between a remaster and a remake, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles retains the original's distinctive isometric visuals while layering in modern enhancements. Players can expect streamlined menus, quality-of-life improvements, voice acting, adjustable difficulty options, and a revised script designed to bring out the depth of Yasumi Matsuno’s celebrated story.
Development has not been without challenges. The source code for the 1997 release was lost, forcing the team to rebuild the game from alternate versions and archived materials. In fact, Maehiro and art director Hiroshi Minagawa openly credited fans for preserving critical resources that made this restoration possible.
Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles will launch on September 30, 2025, for Nintendo Switch, Switch 2 (with a free upgrade option), PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. With such broad platform support, Square Enix is clearly betting on a wide audience to rediscover, or perhaps experience for the first time, the tactical depth and political intrigue that made the original a classic.
The prospect of seeing the GBA entries remastered, or a brand-new chapter set in Ivalice, is now tied directly to how the market responds. For Square Enix, the stakes are equally high: the performance of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles could demonstrate whether tactical RPGs still have the commercial appeal to warrant further investment. In the end, the future of Final Fantasy Tactics may rest in the hands of players. If this remaster finds success, it might just mark the beginning of a new era for Ivalice.
