Calyx: The indie RTS where the map actually fights back
If you are a fan of classic real-time strategy games, you know how hard it is to find something that feels truly new. Many modern games just copy the same old formula, leaving players looking for something fresh. That is exactly why Calyx is being called a breath of fresh air. Developed by Studio 568, this indie title takes the standard RTS stuff we all know and love but gives it a totally new spin with a weird alien enemy and a cool sci-fi vibe.
You are tasked with dropping onto a planet and establishing a massive, automated mining operation from the ground up. With the help of a quirky AI assistant, you must master the art of base-building, linking together power grids, and building factories. Your goal is to harvest resources from hostile planets, but there is a catch: the entire world is being swallowed by a giant, sentient plant organism known as the Calyx. Unlike traditional enemies that send waves of soldiers, the Calyx spreads like a biological infection, slowly choking the map and forcing you to fight for every inch of ground.
For gamers who enjoyed They Are Billions, the pressure in Calyx will feel familiar, but the gameplay is much more aggressive. While They Are Billions focuses on building massive walls to stop a zombie horde, Calyx requires you to actively push back. You can't just sit behind your defenses forever; you have to build tanks, scouts, and artillery to burn away the roots and vines before they overwhelm your power grid and shut down your base.
Master your tech and power your defenses
The game is packed with features that keep things interesting. One of the best parts is the Tech Tree, where you spend research points to unlock massive units like the "Goliath" tank or orbital lasers that can wipe out entire sections of the infestation. You also have to manage a complex power network. If your power poles are destroyed or your energy runs low, your turrets go dark, and the plants will move in instantly. It creates a high-stakes balance between growing your economy and maintaining your front line.
Calyx recently launched into Steam Early Access with a generous amount of content. Right now, players can dive into the first part of the campaign, which includes a tutorial and 16 challenging maps. If you prefer a custom experience, the Skirmish mode offers 7 maps with adjustable difficulty and "seeds" you can share with friends. With a "Very Positive" rating from the community, it is clear that this is the strategy game we’ve been waiting for.
