The legendary World War II real-time strategy game Company of Heroes is making a comeback with the announcement of Company of Heroes: Definitive Edition, a modernized version of the critically acclaimed 2006 classic. Developed by Relic Entertainment, Company of Heroes: Definitive Edition aims to preserve the tactical gameplay that made the original a genre-defining RTS while upgrading the experience for modern PC hardware.

Scheduled to launch in Fall 2026, the release is designed for both returning veterans and newcomers eager to experience one of strategy gaming's most influential titles.

A Complete Collection of the RTS Classic and Its Expansions

The package includes the original Company of Heroes campaign alongside the Opposing Fronts and Tales of Valor expansions, offering players three full campaigns, four playable armies, and more than 50 multiplayer and skirmish maps. Rather than reinventing the game, Relic has focused on improving accessibility and technical performance while keeping the core gameplay intact. Fans can expect support for 4K and ultrawide displays, improved textures and lighting, a modernized user interface, and full 64-bit compatibility.

4K Visuals, Smarter AI, and Better Controls Lead the Charge

Several quality-of-life features have also been added to bring the classic RTS in line with modern expectations. These include customizable hotkeys, grid-key support, vehicle reverse commands, auto-reinforcement options, and enhanced AI behavior, including a new Ruthless difficulty setting for players seeking a tougher challenge. Importantly, Relic has also emphasized support for the game's extensive modding community, ensuring that years of fan-created content remain playable.

For strategy enthusiasts, Company of Heroes: Definitive Edition represents more than a simple remaster. It is an opportunity to revisit one of the most beloved RTS games ever made with modern enhancements that respect its original design. As classic strategy franchises continue to find new audiences, this release could introduce a new generation of players to the tactical depth and battlefield drama that helped define the genre.

Seeing a comeback like this in 2026 makes me think there's still a market for classic strategy. Not everything has to be about action or survival.

Hopefully the price will be right, because these kinds of reissues can be either very good or very expensive unnecessarily. That's where part of its success will lie.

Honestly, classic RTS games greatly benefit from these remasters. Some mechanics feel clunky today, and a good facelift helps a lot.

I'm glad they're respecting the original setting. Company of Heroes worked very well because of its war-themed tone, and there was no need to change its essence.

Making a newer version of a game that's already been released is nice for the nostalgia of people who liked the 2006 version, but it's not a new game, so yeah...

I love this game, but this kind of "just technical" Definitive Edition without new strategic content leaves me a little skeptical.

What interests me most is the return of mods. The community kept this game alive for almost twenty years, so having all that content back with a modernized version is a huge plus. Many games would dream of such longevity. Between the campaigns, the multiplayer maps, and the player creations, there's more than enough to keep you entertained for hundreds of hours without getting bored.

Why not! I started straight with the second one without having played the first, so this would be a good opportunity to discover the origins of the series. The only problem is the release window: if it comes out at the same time as Dawn of War 4, it might be difficult to choose where to spend most of my time.

Company of Heroes: Definitive Edition brings the legendary 2006 World War II RTS game back to PC in Fall 2026, adapting it for modern hardware. The package includes the main story, the Opposing Fronts and Tales of Valor expansions, three campaigns, four playable armies, and over 50 multiplayer and skirmish maps. Instead of revamping gameplay, it aims to modernize it, offering numerous quality-of-life improvements such as 4K and ultrawidescreen support, improved textures and lighting, a revamped interface, 64-bit compatibility, customizable shortcuts, vehicle reverse maneuvering commands, an automatic reinforcement system, and more advanced AI. Relic Entertainment also states that support for community mods created over the years will continue, aiming to create a comprehensive release for both veteran players and strategy enthusiasts experiencing the series for the first time.
