Ascend to ZERO Is Out Now: What Sets It Apart From Roguelikes?
Ascend to ZERO officially launches today (July 13), marking the release of Flyway Games' latest project after months of public testing. Rather than following a familiar action formula, the studio has built the entire experience around a single concept that connects both its narrative and gameplay: turning time into the defining factor behind every decision the player makes.
When time becomes more than a limit—it becomes the core of the gameplay
The story of Ascend to ZERO takes place in the 22XX era, where humanity establishes the Time Lab to research time travel technology. Instead of opening the door to a brighter future, the experiment inadvertently unleashes a mechanical army that pushes civilization to the brink of extinction. Humanity's final hope rests with the Chrono Child, the only being capable of traveling back through time to prevent the catastrophe. This premise also serves as the foundation for the game's entire design philosophy.
Unlike many roguelikes that treat time manipulation as just another combat ability, Ascend to ZERO places it at the center of every run. Players control an Avatar as they explore, fight enemies, and complete objectives within a limited amount of time. The defining mechanic is Time-Stop, which freezes almost everything on the battlefield while allowing the Avatar to continue moving freely, reposition, prepare a strategy, or set up the next move. Once time resumes, the prepared actions, Avatar Skills, and supporting equipment are unleashed almost simultaneously, rewarding players who know how to make every second count.
What makes this system stand out is that time is far more than a countdown timer. It becomes a strategic resource that influences every decision, from movement and enemy encounters to choosing the perfect moment to activate Time-Stop. Instead of relying solely on fast reflexes, the game encourages players to observe, experiment, and gradually refine their approach after every failed run.
Throughout the experience, every run revolves around several interconnected systems:
- Managing the limited time available to complete objectives before the run ends.
- Using Time-Stop at the right moment to change the course of battle.
- Combining Tech Chips, equipment, and upgrades to create different Avatar builds.
- Adapting to new challenges after every loop instead of depending on a single strategy.
While the gameplay defines the identity of Ascend to ZERO, its journey toward release tells another important story. The game went through multiple public demos, allowing Flyway Games to gather community feedback before launch. Among the most common comments were concerns that the opening hours felt slow and that the core mechanics took too long to reveal their full potential. Rather than simply adding more content, the developers focused on refining the pacing, improving character progression, and expanding build options to make every run feel more varied and rewarding.
Of course, only the broader community can determine whether those changes truly succeed once the full release is in players' hands. Even so, Ascend to ZERO demonstrates that Flyway Games has done more than build an interesting time-manipulation mechanic. The studio has spent months listening to player feedback and refining the experience before launch, making that development process just as noteworthy as the gameplay itself.
What about you? Do you think Ascend to ZERO deserves a place in your game collection and offers something fresh to experience in 2026, or would you rather wait for the community's first impressions before making your decision?
