ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE Unveils Character Roster

ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE has introduced more characters who will take part in the upcoming conflict. But are they simply here to expand the story, or will they actually affect how players fight? With the wingman system already confirmed, the new pilots of Joker Flight seem set to play a much bigger role than simply flying alongside the player.

Joker Flight could become an important part of how players fight

In Campaign Mode, players will fight alongside three pilots from Joker Flight: Baxter, Tasha, and Coster. Bandai Namco has confirmed that wingmen will take part directly in aerial battles, with players able to issue real-time tactical commands such as attack and cover orders. Before each mission, players can also decide their squadron's aircraft lineup, adding another layer of strategy alongside directly piloting their own aircraft.

Wings of Theve – Commander, Leader of Joker Flight

At the head of Joker Flight is the pilot known by the title “Wings of Theve,” a legend created to become a symbol of hope for the FCU capital. Behind the image of a legendary ace, however, is a longtime gambler who sometimes even fails to pay his debts, yet remains well-liked thanks to his outgoing personality and personal charm.

He is also an exceptionally skilled pilot, particularly known for his evasive maneuvers, and was selected for a project aimed at creating an artificial ace. He also holds a unique place in the story, as the title “Wings of Theve” is later passed on to the player.

Baxter – Lieutenant Commander, Joker Flight No. 2

Baxter holds the No. 2 position in Joker Flight and is described as the person who helps keep the group together. A former university lecturer, he is calm, knowledgeable, and considerate. Tasha calls him “Teach,” and the two can often be found studying together in the Endurance's mess.

There is currently no information indicating that Baxter has a unique combat ability. However, his role within the squad could become more apparent through his interactions with the other members, especially since the game places an emphasis on building bonds with the squad.

Tasha – Ensign, Joker Flight No. 3

Tasha was once a star pilot for Zvezda, Yuktobania's aerobatic team. She was aboard the Endurance to shoot promotional footage when war broke out and eventually decided to stay on the ship. Her experience with aerial performances also helps explain her image as a pilot known for extreme maneuvers.

Although Bandai Namco has not confirmed that Tasha has a unique gameplay role or ability, her background seems to fit well with the wingman system the game is building around. If these traits are reflected in her AI or how she coordinates on the battlefield, Tasha could become an interesting choice when players build their squad before a mission.

Coster – Lieutenant Junior Grade, Joker Flight No. 4

Coster is described as a wingman who can keep up with Tasha's maneuvers while providing effective cover. This is the clearest connection so far between a character in the roster and a combat role, although the studio has not confirmed that Coster has his own set of skills or stats.

Beyond his flying ability, Coster also has a fun personal trait: he is a diehard rock music fan who brings a compact music player into the cockpit to listen to during missions. This small detail gives Coster his own personality within the squad and makes Joker Flight feel more like a group of pilots with distinct personalities rather than simply a collection of combat units.

Kate Evans – Lieutenant Commander, Leader of Queen Flight

Alongside Joker Flight, the FCU Endurance also has Queen Flight, led by Lieutenant Commander Kate Evans. She is an excellent pilot who always does her best to protect the lives of members from both flights.

The bandages she constantly wears show that she has been through plenty of brutal battles, yet she always maintains a positive attitude around those under her command and never lets them see her fears. Unlike the three members of Joker Flight, Kate's specific gameplay role has not been revealed, so for now, she appears to be more of an important figure within the Endurance's forces than a wingman directly commanded by the player.

Outside of combat, ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE will also let players build bonds with members of their squad. The periods between missions will give players opportunities to learn more about their lives and personalities, adding another layer of interaction to Campaign Mode.

The studio has not yet confirmed whether these relationships will have a direct effect on stats or combat abilities. However, the combination of pre-mission squad composition, real-time wingman commands, and the bond-building system suggests that these new characters could play a much bigger role than a roster created solely to support the story.

Based on what has been revealed so far, ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE is taking a new approach in which players will not only have to master their own aircraft but also learn how to coordinate with the pilots flying alongside them.
