Esoteric Ebb is a narrative-driven isometric role-playing game that blends investigative storytelling with the unpredictable spirit of tabletop RPGs. You play as a cleric sent to the peculiar city of Norvik after a mysterious magical explosion rocks the streets just days before the city's first democratic election. What begins as a routine investigation quickly unravels into a tangled web of conspiracies, political agendas, and arcane secrets that many powerful figures would rather keep buried.

As you explore Norvik, you'll encounter a strange cast of characters, from ideological politicians and eccentric scholars to supernatural beings with their own motives. Conversations are deep and reactive, allowing you to shape your character's personality as you approach to the investigation. Your abilities aren't just numbers on a character sheet, they manifest as internal voices that comment on situations, guide your decisions, and sometimes tempt you toward questionable choices.

Inspired by tabletop mechanics, much of the game revolves around dice-based skill checks. Success is never guaranteed. Failures often open unexpected narrative paths, creating memorable moments that make every playthrough feel distinct.

Norvik itself is a dense and layered city filled with hidden stories, political tensions, and magical oddities. Exploring its streets, towers, and underground spaces will reveal clues about the explosion and the forces shaping the city's future. Magic and clerical powers can help uncover hidden information, influence conversations, or manipulate reality in subtle ways, allowing you to approach problems creatively.

While diplomacy and investigation are often your strongest tools, conflict can still erupt. When situations escalate, encounters are resolved through tactical, turn-based systems influenced by dice rolls and character abilities.

In Esoteric Ebb, the truth is rarely simple, and the path to uncovering it is filled with strange choices, unpredictable outcomes, and the ever-present possibility that failure might lead to the most interesting discoveries of all.

Allowing failed skill checks to create new situations instead of simply blocking progress is an interesting approach. Systems like this often encourage experimentation and can make repeat playthroughs more varied.
