Disappointing. Way too many problems for the return of such a beloved franchise. The controls are bad, the gameplay is repetitive, the graphics are meh and the game is kinda short. At least the story is okay, but it's not enough to make it worth playing.

I've been eagerly awaiting this return, but Legacy of Kain: Ascendance leaves me with a taste of unfinished business. On the one hand, it's great to rediscover the unique atmosphere of Nosgoth and the Shakespearean dubbing. Artistically, it's a total success, as dark and majestic as we've come to love it. Gameplay-wise, however, the license still has one foot in the past. The camera is a purge as soon as the space is reduced, and the platforming phases are sometimes ridiculous due to a rigidity that should no longer be seen today. The system of switching between characters is a great idea on paper, but in practice, the back-and-forth in the spectral world ends up breaking the rhythm. You can also sense that the budget wasn't unlimited: the bestiary quickly goes round in circles, and some environments feel a little empty. This is a game for nostalgic fans ready to forgive some dated mechanics, but for others, the pill will be hard to swallow.

I would have liked an up-to-date sequel to this license. Legacy of Kain has never been an overpowering license, but it used to be a nice one. Today, it's a very mixed bag.

Here speaks a fan of the Legacy of Kain saga who has zero interest in this new game. I don't know if it will be a small gesture for a next game of the saga but it has not generated me any expectation to play it.

It doesn't call my attention at all. I also have all the previous games of the saga pending. Now, with the remasters, possibly I'll pass them at some point, but this game I think I'm not going to play it.

Apparently the gameplay is pretty basic: repetitive combat, decent platforming but no great depth, and it's not really a Metroidvania as advertised. It's short and uneven, but for the price, why not, I suppose, but only if you don't expect much.

I was unaware that a new game of the Legacy of Kain saga had been released and looking at the reviews I think it takes me a bit away from being able to play it.

I think it's worth paying 15€ if you're a fan of the Kain saga or Metroidvania type games, but also keep in mind that it's only a low budget game. There's not much depth to the gameplay or overall length, the art is okay, but it's not much.

Overall, gamers are fairly disappointed with Legacy of Kain: Ascendance. On Steam, reviews are predominantly negative (around 30% positive), reflecting a difficult reception. PlayStation ratings are slightly better (around 3.7/5), but remain mixed. The few positive points mentioned mainly concern the license's nostalgia, the dubbing and some decent visuals. On the other hand, the majority of criticisms concern gameplay deemed rigid, a short lifespan and an overall lack of inspiration. Some players also criticize the inconsistent art direction and lack of respect for the lore. All in all, the community considers the game a disappointment, unworthy of the saga's reputation.

Looking at the reviews, I think this game has been made by people who don't understand what made the previous Legacy of Kain games great, let alone understand what makes a game, at the very least, fun.
