It's awesome that they brought back the original voice actors, but what a shame. It's by far the worst game in the franchise. It's clunky and boring. They deserved better, but after this I'm not so sure we'll get to see another attempt anytime soon.

Legacy of Kain: Ascendance is a project brimming with contradictions: ambitious in vision, uneven in execution. The lore is expanded with genuine generosity, the original voice cast is a gift that should not have been taken for granted, and the idea of exploring the era of Imperial Kain through four distinct perspectives remains the most narratively interesting thing the series could have done with a project of this scale. Fans of the mythology will find material worth the wait. But the game around them is imprecise where it should be surgical, slow where it wants to be dynamic, visually uneven in ways that cannot be ignored.

I don't really like the animated part of the trailer, but the game's pixel art looks really clean. I think I can see that it's only appealing to a small proportion of fans, which is a shame, given that they're probably the ones who were expecting the most.

It is, without a doubt, the weakest installment of the franchise: a project without a single hit. Even the return of the original voice actors is forced: their interpretations no longer correspond to the characters they voiced decades ago, and it is painfully obvious that they are not the same as the characters they voiced decades ago.

It's cool that they bring the original voices, at least in English (in Spanish I remember Tomás Rubio and I get chills) but I think it is not enough to satisfy the fans of the saga.

The Nosgoth universe is respected and the gothic atmosphere still works, but in terms of gameplay, the game remains too classic. Combat and platforming are okay, but don't really bring anything new to the table: we find ourselves with seen and revisited mechanics, with no real originality to stand out. Even the bosses and puzzles are predictable and offer no memorable challenge. The references to Kain and Raziel are nice, but not enough to make up for a game that, outside of its universe, could be almost any metroidvania.

I'd never played a Legacy of Kain game before Ascendance, and yet I was pleasantly surprised. Even without knowing the universe or the old characters, the game is easy to pick up, and you're quickly swept away by the dark, gothic atmosphere. The levels are well constructed, with a good mix of exploration, platforming and combat that remain fluid and intuitive. The mechanics are accessible without being simplistic, making the experience pleasant from the very first minutes. I particularly appreciated the sound and visual ambience: the scenery, lighting and music create a real sense of immersion. Even if some passages are a little repetitive, I found the game captivating and stimulating. For a player who enjoys metroidvania, this is a good low-cost entry point.
