Chronos: Before the Ashes is a third-person action RPG with adventure game elements. This prequel takes place in the same universe as Remnant: From the Ashes. However, the events take place a good time before those of the first part of the series. You take on the role of the chosen one, whose task is to save their homeland from evil. To complete this mission you must go through a maze full of secrets and enemies to defeat, including goblins, minotaurs, and golems. The deeper you travel into it, the more secrets you will encounter and the more you will learn about the nature of the labyrinth.

Fighting monsters will require a lot of dexterity, cunning, good reflexes, and tactical skills. However, when the opponent proves to be stronger than you and your character loses their life, it's possible to be reborn again. But there is a price to be paid... the character will age by one year. This means that the older the character gets, the weaker they will be in melee combat, so older characters are more likely to focus on magical ranged attacks.

As the story progresses in Chronos: Before the Ashes, you will gain new powers, abilities, and weapons to expand your combat capabilities.

The game's graphics are pleasingly cartoony, with gloomy colors and lightning that shows the world as a dark and mysterious place.

    FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

How does aging directly affect combat encounters and strategic decision-making in Chronos: Before the Ashes?
Aging impacts your character's stats, offering both advantages and disadvantages. Younger characters are stronger and faster, while older characters possess higher magical aptitude and wisdom. This forces players to adapt their combat strategies and equipment choices as their character ages throughout the game.
Besides death, what other consequences are there for failing a trial within the Labyrinth?
Failing a trial can lead to a significant decrease in your character's stats, such as strength or agility, or a more permanent drawback related to your character's current age. These setbacks can greatly affect your character's survivability and progress.
How do you manage and mitigate the negative effects of your character's aging, and is it possible to reverse the aging process?
Certain items and specific in-game actions can provide temporary stat buffs that alleviate some of the penalties associated with age. However, there is no way to fully reverse the aging process. The game is designed around embracing and adapting to the changes over time.
How does the game's item system interact with the aging mechanic, and are there items that are more effective for younger or older characters?
Items have different stat requirements and benefits. Some weapons might require more strength, making them better for younger characters, while others might provide magical bonuses suited to an older character's higher arcane abilities. Careful equipment choices are crucial as your character ages.
Can you elaborate on how your character's death contributes to the overall narrative and progression of the game?
Each death resets your character to the beginning, but with the knowledge gained from previous runs. Your character retains any skills and knowledge of the labyrinth gained in previous attempts. This meta-progression is key to learning enemy patterns, puzzle solutions, and finding better equipment.
How does the combat system evolve as your character ages, considering the changes to their physical and magical abilities?
Combat focuses on adapting your playstyle. Younger characters excel at fast, physical attacks and dodges, whereas older characters focus on strategic spellcasting, utilizing their enhanced magical prowess. Understanding these shifts is key to survival.
How are puzzles integrated with the aging mechanic, and do certain solutions become accessible only at specific ages?
Some puzzles require the use of specific skills that are more pronounced at certain ages. Older characters, for instance, might be able to solve puzzles that require advanced magical understanding. This encourages players to revisit areas as their character's age changes.
What is the role of 'experience' and leveling in the context of the aging mechanic? Does experience influence how your character ages?
Experience directly affects your character's skills and abilities, such as strength, dexterity, etc. Experience doesn't alter the rate of aging, but a character who levels up can mitigate some of the negative effects of aging and boost their strengths.
How does the game's world design encourage players to explore and adapt to their character's aging and changing abilities?
The world is designed to provide new experiences and challenges as your character ages. This means that players must constantly reassess strategies, re-evaluate equipment, and explore areas of the labyrinth that might have been inaccessible at earlier ages.
Beyond the core gameplay loop, how does Chronos: Before the Ashes use aging to enhance the story and character development?
The story is intrinsically linked to your character's journey through the labyrinth, and the changes brought on by aging help to create a more profound emotional connection. The narrative unfolds through your character's successes and failures.
