One rainy night in November, a woman’s body is found at an abandoned theme park, mounted on a merry-go-round horse. She had been stabbed repeatedly, and her left eye was gouged out. Kaname Date of the Metropolitan Police Department arrives on the scene. He recognizes the woman. Suddenly, he hears a noise from inside the merry-go-round. He breaks into the merry-go-round’s central column to find a young girl. And in her hands, she grips a bloody ice pick.

In AI: The Somnium Files you will play as Kaname Date as he explores Tokyo in search of clues, witnesses, and suspects. The game will be split between exploration in the real world and exploration within the dream worlds, or Somnia. Kaname Date has an artificial eye that houses your AI companion, Aiba. The eye gives you several abilities, such as X-ray vision, and Aiba provides assistance for more technical challenges. During difficult investigations, you can use a machine called the Psync Device through Aiba, allowing you to enter the memories or dreams of suspects or witnesses. The visual representation of people's minds is called their somnium and solving the mental locks in the space allow Date and Aiba to travel deeper into a person's subconscious and extract vital information.
