Mixed Reactions to Vindictus: Defying Fate Open Beta Launch
Vindictus: Defying Fate is a promising, stylish, and challenging action-RPG that modernizes the core combat DNA of Vindictus (2010) while introducing a Souls-lite formula with co-op. This game looks stunning, feels satisfying to play, but still shows rough edges in balance, AI, and UI polish typical of a true alpha build. The public alpha launched on June 8 at 10 PM EDT and will run until June 16, just before midnight EDT.
Impressive first impression
First and foremost, Vindictus: Defying Fate felt more like a remake of Vindictus (2010), introducing original elements such as Tieve's story, Kalbram Mercenaries, and the Village of Colhen alongside many familiar NPCs such as Aodhan, Ceara, and Marrec. For gameplay, Vindictus: Defying Fate introduces Souls-like combat with no stamina bar, meaning you can dodge/block/counter freely, but mistiming is heavily punished.
At the moment of public alpha, there are 4 playable characters which is: Fiona, the sword and shield tanker with parry mechanics, Lann, the dual blades warrior, fast/agile, high-risk, high-reward, Delia, the knight with heavy-hitting claymore attacks, slower, but comes with impactful strike and lastly Karok – powerful brawler- with brutal style moves, can “grab” boss attacks.
Mixed reviews on Steam
Built in Unreal Engine 5, this game comes with impressive visuals in lighting, particle effects, and character detail. Character designs are vibrant and lean heavily into Korean aesthetic sensibilities, with sleek armor, stylized faces, and very expressive animations. Towns and ruins feel dense and moody, though some indoor areas reuse assets.
Massively praised visuals and combat polish, calling Vindictus: Defying Fate a “highly polished Souls‑like” with good story and voice acting. Many Steam alpha testers noted a fun experience over 10 hours. However, players also experience issues based on Steam reviews, such as UI glitches, AI pathing issues, and missing polish. The difficulty is unbalanced; some fights feel over-tuned even on easy mode.
Vindictus: Defying Fate feels like a love letter to fans of the original Vindictus and fans of boss-focused action games like Dark Souls, Nioh, or Monster Hunter World. If the devs can polish the core systems, rebalance the difficulty curve, and deliver on the co-op potential, this game could carve out a unique niche in the action RPG space.
