Have you ever wondered what would happen if Bloodborne was reborn in the 2D pixel art style of The Legend of Zelda? Introducing Tombwater. Crafted by Max Mraz, creator of the famous Yarntown Remake, this game is not just a test of skill with breathtaking boss battles but also a Metroidvania world teeming with secrets.
The game is set in a once-prosperous mining town called Tombwater in the Wild West. However, a catastrophe and a horrific curse struck at the same time, turning all the residents into madmen and Eldritch monsters (cosmic horror). Players will take on the role of a lone gunslinger, traveling to this cursed town to search for a missing friend. In the process of the game, players will uncover dark secrets buried beneath the town and confront terrifying creatures.
Tombwater is a unique blend of brutal combat mechanics of the Souls-like genre and the exploratory structure of Metroidvania/Zelda-likes. Players will need to spend significant time mastering the combat, as the game demands high skill with mechanics such as dashing, slashing, and stamina management. You can also utilize a diverse arsenal ranging from revolvers, sabers, and explosives to ancient magic.
The game's world is designed to be tightly interconnected, requiring players to traverse areas like canyons, dense forests, quarries, and dark caves. There are many hidden areas and eccentric NPCs with their own quests, creating spaces ripe for exploration.
About the character system, the game offers 5 different starting classes:
Soldier: High health and strength, focused on melee combat.
Gunslinger: A firearm expert with high long-range damage.
Occultist: Uses magic and possesses resistance against madness.
Tinkerer: Focused on crafting and using support items.
Spellblade: A hybrid of melee combat and magic.
Notably, the game features high-risk mechanics typical of Souls games. Players can lose experience points (EXP) upon death but can return to where they fell to reclaim their "ghost" (soul).
Alongside the ultimate challenge of over 20 horrific boss fights and a complex item crafting system, Tombwater also excels in user experience with features like a detailed map and quest log. Interestingly, the game allows you to freely customize the difficulty or disable the loss of experience upon death, ensuring every gamer can enjoy the journey of exploring this vast world in their own way.
A free demo is currently available on Steam, so you can download it to experience the combat and atmosphere before deciding to buy the full version at the end of this March. Remember to use our comparison tool to purchase Tombwater at the best price!
