Thick As Thieves Drops PvPvE, Shifts Focus to Solo and Co‑Op Play
Thick As Thieves, the stealth-driven immersive sim from veteran developer Warren Spector (creator of the Deus Ex series) and OtherSide Entertainment, is undergoing a major design shift. The game, which was originally announced as a hybrid PvPvE experience, will now focus entirely on single-player and two-player cooperative gameplay.
A significant change of approach
When first revealed, Thick As Thieves promised a novel blend of competitive and cooperative heists, where players could clash against one another while navigating a fully simulated world. However, according to a recent update from OtherSide, the team concluded that the PvPvE structure was not delivering the experience they envisioned. The competitive element has been removed, allowing the developers to concentrate on tighter, more engaging stealth gameplay.
The change reflects a broader strategy to refine the player experience. By narrowing the focus to solo and co-op play, the team aims to deepen tactical decision-making and create more consistent pacing during missions. “As development progressed, we realized that the moments we enjoyed most were in solo and cooperative play,” the studio explained in its announcement.
Under this new approach, the game will support rich single-player campaigns alongside two-player co-op heists, where friends can team up to plan and execute complex operations. According to the developers, this shift already makes the game feel more compelling in internal testing, with more meaningful choices and stealth opportunities.
The community reaction to such a change has been mixed. Some fans express disappointment at the loss of the competitive PvPvE element, which initially generated significant buzz. Others welcome the change, noting that pure co-op and solo play better aligns with the immersive sim genre and the design philosophy that Spector is known for.
Thick As Thieves is set to appear at the indie-focused Triple-I Initiative on April 9, where a new trailer and additional gameplay details are expected. The game remains scheduled for release later in 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. While the PvPvE element is off the table for launch, OtherSide has not ruled out exploring competitive multiplayer features in future updates.
This pivot highlights the challenges developers face when balancing ambition with design feasibility, and demonstrates a commitment to crafting a stealth experience that prioritizes depth and player agency over multiplayer spectacle.
