Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake Underway

One of the biggest surprises that opened the recent PlayStation Showcase was Sony’s announcement that it will remake Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. They accompanied their announcement with a teaser trailer, with a voice-over from likely one of the game’s iconic characters, Bastila Shan.

What do we know about the KOTOR remake?

Apart from what’s in the trailer, not much else is known about the KOTOR remake, except that it will be exclusive to the PlayStation 5 (sorry, Xbox fans). Apart from the PS5, it will also release on the PC. Sony also didn’t provide a release date so we will have to wait a while for additional news.

The remake will build the game from the ground up, so not only will we see enhanced graphics and reworked character designs, but we will also see an updated combat system from the original’s round-based style.

Long long ago, in a galaxy far, far away...

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republicoccurs 4,000 years before the events of the original Star Wars Trilogy. That point of history saw the rise of one of the greatest Sith Lords ever: Darth Revan. Nearly conquering the entire Republic, he suddenly disappears and is replaced by his apprentice, Darth Malak, who carries on the war. The player is a young Jedi who takes on the quest to either defeat Malak (light side) or usurp his power (dark side).

KOTOR allows you to customize your appearance, gender, and lightsaber color. Choices you make push your character alignment to either the light side or dark side of the Force. You can learn abilities from both sides, such as Mind Trick or Force Lightning. You also create a party of companions from NPCs that you meet and can even start a romance.

Lucasfilm Game’s Executive Producer Orion Kellog has this to say about the remake:

“We know that KOTOR is one of the most beloved Star Wars stories ever told,” Kellogg says. “We really appreciate the stature it has with all of the fans out there. As hardware advances and as our game-making prowess advances and as storytelling [techniques] advance, what better time to allow players to re-experience this great story with all of those lessons learned, and bring it back to modern platforms using modern methods? That’s something I’ve wanted to do personally for a very long time, and I think everybody involved with Star Wars games has wanted to do for a very long time.”
