Screamer 2026: The 90s Racing Legend Roars Back

Screamer 2026: The Return of a 90s Racing Legend

Screamer is a brand-new reimagining of the classic racing series with the same name from the 1990s. This game was developed by Milestone (the famous racing game developer behind Hot Wheels Unleashed and Ride 6) and it was just released in late March 2026. Let’s take a look at the plot, mechanics, and gameplay of this title!

Why did Milestone choose to revive the Screamer brand after 30 years?

Unlike pure racing games, Screamer (2026) places a heavy emphasis on narrative storylines, rather than focusing solely on racing elements. The game is set in the near future, revolving around an illegal street racing tournament called "The Tournament," organized by a mysterious character named Mr. A (voiced by the famous actor Troy Baker).

The game features an incredibly bold 90s anime style, with cutscenes produced by Polygon Pictures (the Japanese studio behind many major film projects). Milestone has developed a total of 16 characters divided into 5 teams (Green Reapers, Soldiers, Scientists, etc.), with each character and team having their own unique motivations, including revenge, fame, money, and others.

In Screamer, the developer has combined high-speed arcade racing with combat mechanics to provide an exhilarating experience for players. The "soul" of the game is its ECHO system, which allows the players not only to drive their vehicle but also to eangage in challenging fights while driving it.

There are two types of energy for players to accumulate: Sync and Entropy. When players want to use Boost (speed increase) or Shield (protective armor), they must accumulate Sync. Meanwhile, when players want to perform a strike (attacking opponents) or overdrive (a state of chaos, no brakes, and maximum power), they must accumulate entropy.

A controversial yet highly creative mechanic of this game is the dual-stick control system. Players use the left stick to steer and the right stick to perform drifts. This requires players to spend some time getting used to it before they can master the vehicles of each character.

In addition to diverse game modes such as Tournament, Team Racing, PvP, and Split-screen, the game also allows players to freely personalize their car's appearance by unlocking parts and decals through the story exploration process. Finally, to support new players, the developer has integrated a range of useful accessibility features such as auto-acceleration, braking assistance, and a unique slow-motion mode for offline play, making the game more "beginner-friendly."

With beautiful graphics, a very stylish anime flair, vibrant music, and an exciting combat system, Screamer is a game for those who love the feel of colorful neon arcade racing, enjoy anime, and want to challenge themselves with a novel control mechanic. I’m all about motorcycles, retro gaming, and the golden handheld era of the PSP and PS Vita. I love the thrill of the ride just as much as the nostalgia of classic games. I believe games can bring people together, spark creativity, and make the world a little brighter—one adventure at a time.
