Dead By Daylight features some of the most iconic villains in movie history: Leatherface, Freddy Krueger, Jason, and Michael Myers. But for Chapter 23 coming in March 2022, the game will be collaborating with someone extra special.
Few fictional ghosts are as unforgettable and terrifying as Sadako Yamamura, the vengeful antagonist of Koji Suzuki's Ringu. The 1998 movie adaptation traumatized audiences worldwide with the image of Sadako crawling out of a TV set to kill the next victim of her curse. And now she's coming to Dead By Daylight. We don't get to see the physical form of Sadako in the trailer, but we do get a glimpse of her well, along with the sound of a telephone and the static of a VHS tape—all iconic ingredients of her mythology. Without a doubt, Japan's most famous female ghost is finally coming to a major game. Hopefully the developers will do her justice.
Ringu's story is about a cursed VHS tape that kills its viewer seven days after watching it. The book spawned not just a movie franchise but also pretty much the entire J-Horror genre, with imitators adopting the vengeful long-haired female ghost trope. It eventually made its way West, where it was successfully remade as The Ring by Gore Verbinski.
Reiko Imayasu, producer for Kadokawa Studios, says this:
“We are very excited for the collaboration with Behaviour Interactive and the Dead by Daylight team. We’ll be sending one of our most haunting characters to the Fog to pour down horrors that will rival all the great predecessors. Fans should beware of their heart; this deadly newcomer will definitely strike them, and they will tremble with fear whilst they wait.”
