Gigabyte RTX 5090 Aorus Master runs cooler with liquid metal mod

Pure liquid metal thermal paste drops temps on RTX 5090 Aorus Master

der8auer has published a new video evaluating assertions that Gigabyte didn’t use “genuine” liquid metal thermal paste in its RTX 5090 Aorus Master graphics card. In his video, he verified that Gigabyte’s “Composite Metal Grease” is not a true liquid metal thermal interface material (TIM). Instead, it’s a blend of conventional thermal paste and liquid metal. This combined material is simpler to apply in automated manufacturing settings. However, it is not as efficient as pure liquid metal TIM.

Prior to taking apart Gigabyte’s GPU, der8auer assessed the GPU under Furmark for 15 minutes with a constant 40% fan speed. During this test, the GPU ran at 78-79 degrees. After reassembling the GPU and applying pure liquid metal thermal compound in identical conditions, the GPU’s load temperatures were 74 degrees. Thus, Gigabyte’s GPU operated 4-5 degrees warmer when compared to pure liquid metal thermal compound.

These tests validate that Gigabyte’s hybrid liquid metal solution is less efficient than pure liquid metal thermal compounds. der8auer points out that this hybrid material performs more like traditional thermal paste than pure liquid metal TIM.

Applying liquid metal TIM is more challenging than using standard thermal compounds. It also poses a higher risk of damage, as it is conductive and can corrode certain materials. In the event of leakage, liquid metal TIM could short-circuit electrical components, potentially harming products. Hybrid materials carry similar risks while offering less effective thermal performance. However, their ease of application is appealing to manufacturers.

Although genuine liquid metal offers better performance than Gigabyte’s hybrid solution, a temperature drop of 4-5 degrees may not justify voiding the warranty on a graphics card priced over £2,000.

While the RTX 5090 sets a new benchmark for maximum performance, high-end power isn’t the sole choice in the market. The RTX 5080 boasts impressive next-generation features, rapid ray tracing, and DLSS 4 support—all while being more budget-friendly. Whether you are building a high-performance system or upgrading your current rig, the RTX 5080 provides excellent gaming and creative capabilities at a competitive price.
