Over the Hill: What Makes This Wilderness Adventure Special?
After a busy day, I sometimes want to spend the evening getting far away, even if it’s only through a screen. Put on some music, drive along a lakeshore, then stop as the evening sun touches the water—the thought alone feels relaxing. Bring a few friends, and even getting lost could become a good story. That’s what makes me want to learn more about Over the Hill: the promise of a trip where the roads you follow and the stops along the way each have something to offer.
Find your own route and tackle the terrain with friends
Over the Hill is scheduled to launch on Steam on October 14, 2026, with PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 versions following in 2027. Funselektor and Strelka Games build on the idea behind Art of rally’s free roam mode, putting players behind the wheel of off-road vehicles inspired by the 1960s–1980s to explore nature at their own pace.
Canada and Algeria are the two regions available at launch, each featuring handcrafted areas. Remote cabins, natural landmarks, and scenic viewpoints await discovery. Choosing a route and packing equipment brings to mind how Expeditions: A MudRunner Game approaches off-road exploration, where preparation helps you go further.
The minimalist art style is somethings that worth to talk about, too. In the images shown so far, trees, mountainsides, and vehicles take shape through clean, simple forms, with a palette that feels bright yet easy on the eyes. I like how the colours and lighting give the scenery a gentle feel, making even a stretch of lake or hillside look worth pulling over to admire a little longer.
Beautiful scenery doesn’t necessarily mean an easy drive, though. You’ll need low gear for difficult stretches, a winch when your vehicle gets stuck, or planks to cross gaps. Players familiar with SnowRunner may recognize some of these techniques. A steep slope becomes a decision to make: try again, find a winch point, or take another route? There’s room for patience on this trip.
Weather also helps shape the journey. Rain affects grip, while darkness limits visibility; players can set up camp, rest, and wait for better conditions. Sometimes, taking a break is a way to make the rest of the trip more enjoyable.
On easier stretches, the cassette player and the scenery can keep you company. The game also lets you photograph wildlife to complete a collection, find equipment, and upgrade your vehicle. I like the idea that everyone might come away from a session with something different: a useful item, a beautiful photo, or simply another place they’d like to revisit. Those small rewards give a detour a purpose.
You can also bring along up to three friends. Co-op lets the group help each other overcome obstacles and recover vehicles, while individual progress carries over between single-player and multiplayer.
From what’s been shown, Over the Hill draws its appeal from the mix of a relaxing getaway and challenges behind the wheel. I hope its routes will be interesting enough to give the group problems to solve together, as well as time to take in the scenery. If it delivers, “Fancy a drive tonight?” could become a perfectly natural reason to return.
