Narrative campaigns will be back in Battlefield

The dismissal of narrative campaigns as a central feature in the Battlefield series has always been a controversial subject. The launch of Battlefield 4 was quite disappointing for players who enjoy single-player content. Developer DICE ditched the single-player campaign in order to launch a game with a deeper focus on multiplayer. This kind of approach to the franchise has continued in the following installments, despite many complaints from the community. In fact, the lack of a campaign story and the huge multiplayer maps are two things that make Battlefield different from its main competitor, the Call of Duty series.

Although you can find some single-player content in the latest installments in the series, it mainly serves as an introduction of sorts to each game. No memorable characters or storylines have accompanied any of these games, and it's always been quite a disappointing matter for the fans. But this will change in the future. Electronic Arts wants to take the FPS franchise in a different direction. It has taken them 20 years to realize that a good campaign with a solid storyline can add depth and personality to the series, and according to an official announcement made via Twitter, the new Ridgeline Games studio will be in charge of creating a narrative campaign for Battlefield.

The new campaign will be set in the Battlefield universe, but it won't be a part of Battlefield 2042. It is yet to be disclosed if the campaign will be part of the next installment in the series, but it's the most logical thing to assume. The announcement has been received with joy by the fans of the series, who can't wait to know more on this matter.

The announcement also confirms the support for Battlefield 2042 which will continue to be the series's flagship, at least until a new game is announced.
