Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 Have Been Delisted

It seems Solid Snake has gone underground, at least for the time being. Konami has announced it is temporarily delisting Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater from digital stores. The reason: to renew video licenses.

According to the Konami website:

“We are currently working on renewing the licenses for select historical archive footage used in-game, therefore, we have made the temporary decision to begin suspending the sale of Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3 and all products that include these games from digital storefronts globally starting from November 8th, 2021. We sincerely ask for your patience and understanding as we work towards making these products available for purchase once again."

They didn’t state which footage required such a renewal, but both games do use archived footage and make several references to the Cold War and even have footage of the late JFK to give the story weight and plausibility. You can see some references in the intro video, care of IGN Guides.

Both games have proven exceedingly popular during their release and proved instrumental in setting up future installments of the Metal Gear franchise.

Konami has yet to announce a time window for renewing these licenses, so those who haven’t played these two classics on whatever platforms may be in for a long wait to see them on digital stores again. However, newer titles such as Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Metal Gear Survive, Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes, and Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, remain available for purchase.
