SWAT Commander Combines Shooter Action with Sharp Strategy
SWAT Commander is the latest tactical FPS making waves in the Early Access scene. Developed by Ukrainian studio Red Mountain Games and published by Ritual Interactive, the game launched on Steam on July 31, 2025, with a strong focus on realism, teamwork, and strategic gameplay. Players step into the dual role of a SWAT team leader—issuing orders and coordinating strategy—while also taking direct control of an operative on the field. And the result is a mixed experience between high-stakes planning with boots-on-the-ground execution.
Set across a variety of tense scenarios, including hostage rescues, suspect apprehension, and bomb threats, SWAT Commander emphasizes methodical action and team-based coordination. Players can go it alone with AI teammates or team up in co-op mode with up to five friends. Realistic equipment, breach tactics, and room-clearing procedures are central to gameplay, aiming to recreate the tension and precision of real-world SWAT operations. Maps range from corporate offices to industrial compounds, each demanding different tactical approaches.
The game’s free demo, SWAT Commander: Prologue, offered a glimpse into its mechanics and tone with a single mission called “Hot Reception.” While the Prologue received mixed reviews on Steam, the Early Access release has fared better, earning a “Very Positive” rating from users impressed by the depth of its tactical systems and cooperative play. However, players have noted some rough edges in terms of UI polish, AI behavior, and mission variety—common issues for a game in early development.
Looking ahead, the developers plan to expand the game’s mission count, add new game modes, and refine mechanics based on community feedback. With its commitment to authentic squad-based action and ongoing development, SWAT Commander has the potential to grow into a standout title in the tactical shooter space, particularly for fans of SWAT 3 or Ready or Not.
