Why Kristala stands out in a crowded Soulslike scene
Not every game in this space tries to change things, but Kristala clearly wants to do more than just follow the usual formula. It’s a third-person action RPG with a Soulslike backbone, but instead of another armored warrior dragging a sword through dark ruins, you step into the role of a feline fighter trying to survive in a world that’s slowly falling apart.
The combat will feel familiar if you’ve spent time with games like Dark Souls. Timing matters, enemies don’t forgive mistakes, and every fight asks you to stay focused. But the game doesn’t lock you into one way of playing. You’re free to approach encounters differently depending on your build and your patience.
There’s a bit more going on here than just dodging and attacking. Stealth plays a real role, giving you the option to avoid fights or thin out enemies before things get messy. Movement is also more flexible, with climbing and traversal that make exploring feel less stiff. On top of that, you’re dealing with magic systems, clan abilities, gear upgrades, and crafting, all tied into how your character evolves over time.
More than just a Soulslike gimmick
Kristala spent a long time in Early Access, and that history shows. The developers kept adjusting things as players got their hands on it—combat pacing, enemy behavior, even how levels flow from one area to another. Instead of dropping a full package from day one, the game was built piece by piece through chapters, which gave people a chance to see how it changed over time.
That process helped shape what the game is now, even if it came with a few rough moments along the way. By the time it reached full release, it felt more complete, more confident in what it was trying to be.
Calling it “Dark Souls with cats” might sound catchy, but it misses the point. The faster movement, stealth options, and clan-based progression give it its own identity. It’s still challenging, still punishing when you mess up, but it doesn’t feel locked into the same rhythm as the games it’s compared to.
If you’re in the mood for something familiar but not completely predictable, Kristala is worth checking out. Before you pick it up, run it through our price comparison tool and grab the best price available for Kristala.
