FATAL FRAME/PROJECT ZERO: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse coming to PC and consoles

Heads up, horror fans. KOEI TECMO just announced that their survival horror game FATAL FRAME/PROJECT ZERO: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse will be remastered and released for the PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. This marks the first time that the game will be playable outside of Japan, where it was a Wii-exclusive. Curiously, another Fatal Frame sequel, FATAL FRAME: Maiden of Black Water, had already made the transition to PC and consoles in October last year. 

Mask of the Lunar Eclipse follows the story of Ruka Minazuki. Ten years ago, she and four other girls were kidnapped by serial killer Yō Haibara and brought into the caverns beneath the isle of Rougetsu. All five were later rescued by a detective, but for some reason the girls had all lost their memories, remembering only a haunting melody and the moonlit image of a dancing masked woman. 

Years later, two of the girls die in a grotesque manner, their faces masked and bodies posed as if in mourning. Fearing they may be next, the three remaining victims gather at Rougetsu isle in an attempt to solve the mystery and recover their lost memories. 

Mask of the Lunar Eclipse won’t change the basics of the formula: you still control a female protagonist forced to explore haunted locations. Your only weapon against violent spirits is the Camera Obscura, which damages enemies each time you take their picture. The most damaging yet riskiest picture is the Fatal Frame, taken at the moment of a ghost’s attack. 

What is new with the remaster promises improved graphics to heighten the realism and terror of traversing haunted houses and hospitals. Each of the girls will have new costumes, as well as a Photo mode where you can freely pose characters and ghosts.
