Astro Bot takes home Game of the Year trophy at the New York Game Awards

The unexpected success of Astro Bot proves that games are all about fun and that even a platformer can hold its own against triple-A titles. The New York Game Awards recently held its 14th annual event, and unsurprisingly, Astro Bot emerged as a big winner once again, taking home awards for Best Music, Best Kids’ Game, and yet another Game of the Year trophy.

While presenting at the New York Game Awards, former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé joked that the beloved PlayStation-exclusive platformer Astro Bot "almost outdid Nintendo at its own game."

It’s evident that Astro Bot drew significant inspiration from various 3D platformers, particularly iconic Mario titles like Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Odyssey. However, the game stands out with its unique twist—a heartfelt celebration of PlayStation history.

When accepting the Game of the Year award at The Game Awards 2024 last month, Astro Bot director Nicolas Doucet paid tribute to Nintendo, acknowledging that he had been inspired by Mario games ever since he first encountered them as a child.

"I remember I was a kid in 1989 Christmas, and I got a grey box. There was a game packed in; it was called Super Mario Bros, and it was really, really great. So we are in Japan, we are in Tokyo, they are in Kyoto, but I want to pay tribute to the company who really put platformers on the map, showed us innovation and quality consistently, and inspired us to actually make the game that we made," he said.

Despite Nintendo's strong position in the platforming genre, it has not released a new 3D platformer since Super Mario Odyssey, which launched back in 2017. However, a new entry is likely to arrive on the Nintendo Switch 2. In the meantime, Astro Bot has undeniably become one of the best platformers in recent years, solidifying its place as PlayStation's flagship title for years to come.
