Need for Speed Rivals is the twentieth installment in the Need for Speed franchise that was developed by Ghost Games and Criterion Games. It's an open world racing video game released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on 19 November 2013, and then for both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as launch titles in the same month. The gameplay in Need for Speed Rivals is similar to other Need for Speed games. The player assumes the role of either a Racer or a Cop, where each side has their own unique play style. There are eleven upgradable gadgets (EMP, shockwaves, spike strips, and even an ability to call in a roadblock) available for usage. Need for Speed Rivals takes place in Redview Country, a fictional location. Several jumps, speed traps, and unlockable cars are featured in the game's open world, which is similar to Most Wanted's set-up. There is a career progression system for both the Cop and the Racer, and progression functions differently for the two of these: Speedlists for Racer and Assignments for the Cop. Those are sets of objectives that consist of various tasks such as dangerous driving, race standings, and maneuvers. By completing these tasks, the player levels up and unlocks new content, and then new tasks can be chosen. The Autolog system allows for friends to compete by posting the times of completed Assignments and Speedlists on a Speed Wall for both local and global leaderboards. There is a new social system called AllDrive in Need for Speed Rivals that allows players to smoothly transition between playing alone to playing with friends. This allows players to both play cooperatively or against each other whenever they want to. A dynamic weather system is also featured in the game and it improves the game's immersion. Need for Speed Rivals is one of the better Need for Speed games with impressive gameplay, solid visuals, and great vehicle selection.
