    FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use both the drum controller and standard button controls interchangeably during a single song in Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival?
No, the control scheme (drum or buttons) is set before the song begins and cannot be switched mid-performance.
Does the game penalize you for hitting the drum or buttons when there are no notes displayed on screen?
No, there is no penalty for hitting the drum or buttons outside of the note timings; however, it won't contribute to your score or combo.
Are there different difficulties for the same song, and how do they impact the note patterns and gameplay?
Yes, each song has multiple difficulty levels (Easy, Normal, Hard, Oni, and sometimes Ura Oni), which affect the number, speed, and complexity of the notes.
How does the 'Don' and 'Ka' note system work, and what's the difference between them?
'Don' notes require hitting the center of the drum or a specific button, while 'Ka' notes require hitting the rim of the drum or a different button. Successfully hitting both contributes to your score and combo.
Can I adjust the timing offset to better align the notes with my button presses or drum hits?
Yes, the game features a timing adjustment option within the settings menu to calibrate the audio-visual synchronization to your preference.
How does the 'Soul Gauge' mechanic work, and what's its purpose during gameplay?
The Soul Gauge increases with successful hits and decreases with misses. Filling the Soul Gauge allows you to clear the song, while an empty gauge results in a game over.
Does the game offer any visual feedback or cues to help anticipate complex note patterns and rhythms?
Yes, the game provides visual cues, such as the note's color, size, and movement, as well as the song's audio to help players anticipate the rhythm.
Are there any special note types or mechanics that introduce unique challenges during songs?
Yes, special note types like the 'Drumroll' notes (requiring rapid drum hits) and the 'Giant Notes' exist that offer a variation in the gameplay.
How does the multiplayer mode work, and can I play with friends locally or online?
The game supports both local and online multiplayer modes. Players compete to achieve the highest score or complete songs together, depending on the game mode.
Does the game track my performance or provide any kind of feedback on how I can improve my rhythm game skills?
Yes, the game tracks your scores and provides feedback on accuracy, combo, and overall performance, enabling players to measure progress and hone their skills.

This game looked familiar and now I recall playing a very basic version of this in a Yakuza title as a minigame. Rhythm games are usually challenging to a certain degree and fun to play every once in a while so having different game modes and an online component are certainly a plus for who plans to buy this title.

Taiko no Tatsujin falls into the category of rhythm games, a niche genre where you have to press the keys - in this case beat the drums - in time to the music. There is no real story mode, but it is possible to follow the adventures of the two protagonists by accumulating Taiko points and thus advance in the Rewards Map. The map is divided into boxes and some of them contain parts of the story, while others contain rewards which can be Don coins, the game currency, or new items in the shop.
