Sony’s ongoing collaboration with AMD continues to show promising results, and PS5 lead system architect Mark Cerny has now confirmed that it will eventually bring Frame Generation to “PlayStation platforms.” However, in an interview with Digital Foundry, he clarified that this feature won’t be arriving on PS5 systems within this year.
Cerny discussed the progress behind FSR Redstone, which has also contributed to advancements in PSSR upscaling. He explained that FSR Frame Generation is likewise built on what he described as “co-developed technology.” According to him, the joint efforts between Sony and AMD have been moving forward steadily, and he’s pleased with the results so far.
“Just to clarify a few things about the collaboration with AMD, the new PSSR uses the same core co-developed algorithm as FSR Redstone’s Upscaling (to avoid confusion, I’ll use the new names today rather than FSR4),” Cerny shared. “FSR Frame Generation is also based on co-developed technology (or as my good friend Jack Huynh puts it, ‘co-engineered technology’). I’m very happy with how that work is progressing, and an equivalent frame generation library should be seen at some point on PlayStation platforms.”
Sony’s Mark Cerny to Digital Foundry
When it comes to what exactly those “PlayStation platforms” refer to, Cerny remained vague, only stating that Sony has no major technology launches planned for the remainder of the year and that more details will be shared later.
Looking back, Cerny and AMD’s Jack Huynh previously outlined some of the innovations being developed through this partnership. The goal is to deliver notable graphical improvements while also lowering processing demands.
One such advancement is Neural Arrays, which allow GPU compute units to work together on larger tasks instead of handling smaller workloads individually. Another is Radiance Cores, built on Neural Radiance Caching, designed to enable real-time ray tracing and path tracing, representing what Huynh described as a completely new rendering approach for AMD.
The PlayStation 5 Pro is designed to deliver enhanced immersion, sharper visuals, and smoother performance, and these upcoming technologies highlights Sony’s continued focus on advancing graphical quality in gaming.
