Borderlands 3 is getting crossplay, almost

One would think that Gearbox is a big enough developer and that Borderlands 3 is a popular enough game to be left out of the internal war between the huge video game companies. One year and a half after its release, it's about time that the game would get what seems to be a common feature in many other games, that is crossplay between platforms. Even though multiplayer is not the main part of Borderlands 3 because it features a very complete single-player campaign, the opportunity of sharing the game with other friends is always welcome and opens up quite a few gameplay options. Therefore, Randy Pitchford's announcement revealing that an upcoming patch would add crossplay support "across all platforms" was received with joy by the players. Unfortunately, that's not the full story.

As Pitchford's tweet reveals, publisher 2K Games has asked them to remove crossplay support for PlayStation consoles. Sony is still a bit too stubborn to let PlayStation players share the fun with others from different platforms when it comes to big games, especially if they do not get their cut of the cake. The most immediate result of that is that they have now to deal with quite a few unhappy players due to a policy that started a couple of years ago. It does not really make much sense, as there are quite a few smaller games that feature crossplay across all platforms, including PlayStation consoles. Then, is it a matter of the popularity of the game?

Gearbox president and CEO Randy Pitchford has not provided any more details on this matter. Therefore, we can only speculate about the reasons behind all this. The only truth is that crossplay is coming to Borderlands 3 at some point, so if you are playing the game on any platform other than a PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5, you will be able to share the fun with your friends in multiplayer mode.
