AMD has officially released AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF 2) alongside their 24.9.1 drivers

AMD has officially released AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF 2) alongside their 24.9.1 drivers

In July 2024, a beta version of AFMF 2, AMD's Fluid Motion Frames tech, was launched by AMD. Yesterday, the red team released the AMD Adrenalin 24.9.1 driver, which now officially supports the final version of AFMF 2.

One of the significant improvements in AFMF2 is the resolution of a major issue present in AFMF1. Previously, AFMF1 would disable Frame Generation during fast movements, which was a major drawback. AFMF2 aims to address this issue.

According to AMD, AFMF2 now includes fast motion optimization, allowing AMD users to experience smoother gameplay and higher FPS even during fast action scenes, with more consistent frame generation. Additionally, AFMF2 can now be enabled in any game utilizing OpenGL, Vulkan, DirectX 11, or DirectX 12, making it a significant development. This means that AFMF2 can now be used in numerous PC games that do not support DLSS 3 or FSR 3.0.

AFMF 2 now also supports Radeon Chill, which, according to AMD, enables a low-latency FPS cap. Moreover, two new major features have been added to AFMF 2: the Search Mode and the Performance Mode.

The Search Mode enhances gameplay smoothness by improving the functionality of "fallback" in AFMF 2. Fallback occurs when AFMF frame generation is briefly turned off during fast-motion scenes to maintain high image quality, which previously caused jitter and impacted gameplay smoothness. On the other hand, the Performance Mode introduces three settings: Auto, Quality, and Performance. Quality was the default setting in AFMF 1, while the new Performance setting reduces the overhead of AFMF 2 to facilitate high frame rate gaming experiences on a wider range of devices.

Finally, this new driver incorporates all the enhancements from the AMD Adrenalin 24.20.11.01 driver, ensuring an optimal gaming experience in titles such as God of War: Ragnarok, Final Fantasy 16, and Frostpunk 2.
