Mina the Hollower is a gothic, retro-inspired action-adventure game from acclaimed indie studio Yacht Club Games, the creators of Shovel Knight. Set in a haunting world of cursed islands and eerie secrets, it blends classic Game Boy Color–era design sensibilities with modern, precision-focused gameplay.

You play as Mina, a skilled inventor and “Hollower” sent on a desperate mission to restore a dying island. Armed with her signature whip, the Nightstar, and a variety of sidearms and trinkets, she must battle grotesque creatures, uncover hidden paths, and unravel the mystery behind the island’s decay.

At its core, the game combines top-down exploration, tight action combat, and puzzle-driven discovery. Players can whip enemies from multiple angles, dodge and counter with careful timing, and use Mina’s unique “Hollowing” ability to burrow underground—granting brief invulnerability and enabling fast traversal through hazards and terrain.

The world design emphasizes non-linear exploration and secrets, echoing classics like The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, while layering in tougher, more deliberate combat inspired by Soulslike and Castlevania-style encounters. A wide range of weapons, upgrades, and trinkets allows for flexible builds and playstyles.

Visually, Mina the Hollower delivers finely crafted pixel art that captures the charm of 8-bit and Game Boy Color aesthetics, enhanced with modern animation, widescreen presentation, and fluid controls. The atmosphere leans into gothic horror, supported by a rich, moody soundtrack that reinforces its eerie tone.

The result is a challenging but highly replayable adventure that fuses nostalgia with modern design philosophy—offering exploration, combat mastery, and discovery in equal measure.
