Thrones of Decay redeems Total War: Warhammer III developer
Creative Assembly has done a great job in terms of representing the universe of Games Workshop's tabletop game with great authenticity and turning it into a massive and exciting strategy video game. However, the studio has always been criticized for its monetization policy when it comes to DLCs. The number of factions, legendary lords, and units present in the Warhammer universe is huge, and every player has their favourite. It's obvious that including all of them at launch would be a colossal task, and in the case of the Total War: Warhammer series these span across three different games and plenty of DLCs. However, many players considered the DLC quite expensive for the content they added.
A new approach
Total War: Warhammer III - Thrones of Decay changes that. The latest DLC for Total War: Warhammer III features three different factions with new legendary lords, heroes, flying units, gameplay mechanics, and more. Each of them offers a new way of playing the game, but the DLC also overhauls some basic campaign mechanics for Nurgle, the Dwarfs, and the Empire. But the key to the success of Thrones of Decay is that you don't have to purchase the whole DLC if you are not interested in the full package. It has been split into three separate parts each containing one of the legendary lords and their respective armies. You can choose just to purchase Malakai, Elspeth, or Tamurkhan and have access to all of their martial power on the battlefield.
As simple as this change may seem, it's something that has been very welcomed by the community and it's making Total War: Warhammer III - Thrones of Decay a favourite of the players. Of course, the new flying units and gameplay mechanics introduced with the DLC have a lot to do with that too as they offer new and exciting ways of enjoying the game.
Perhaps the most important consequence of Thrones of Decay is that Creative Assembly may change the way it releases additional content for good. We will have to wait until a new DLC is announced to see if it changes for real.
