The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is shown in its first trailer

With a 2021 release announced in 2019, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum has remained a mystery for months. Only the logo of the game was unveiled when it was announced and since then we only have been able to discover some screenshots from the game when they were published last May. Until now, no video of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum had been released.

Daedalic has revealed the first cinematic trailer for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, in which we can get a glimpse of Mordor. Admittedly the video is quite short and it still doesn't show any gameplay, but the developers of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum have spoken with IGN and they have revealed a number of details about the game.

We already knew that The Lord of the Rings: Gollum was a narrative action-adventure game that will explore the two sides of the character, Gollum and Sméagol. Now, we know a little more about other aspects of the game, like combat, which won't really be present in the game. It makes sense since physical strength isn't really Gollum's strong point. However, that doesn't mean there won't be enemies and that we won't be able to get rid of them.

"It is mostly a non-combat game, but Gollum will be able to stealthily take out enemies. However, this will not be easy and always come with big risks. We want players to carefully weigh these encounters. After all, Gollum’s strengths lie in cunning not combat."

Another rather interesting detail has been revealed, we will be able to meet other characters from Tolkien's saga in the game, who can obviously become our allies and help Gollum.

"Gollum doesn’t use weapons, but he can distract enemies with throwables. In parts of the game, he will also profit from the abilities of special allies and can use the environment to his advantage."

We'll have to wait to find out more about this, but we also discovered that The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will take place "alongside the first book when Frodo is still in the Shire and knows nothing yet."

Regarding the construction of the levels, some of them will be rather linear, with areas that will only be accessible when we  fulfill certain conditions. Other levels will be more open, allowing different approaches.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum looks promising so far and we can't wait to learn more about the game. In the meantime, you can check out IGN's full article here for all the details.
