Latest SteamOS update includes more clues about Valve’s Steam Machine

SteamOS 3.8 and a new leak point to an approaching Steam Machine launch

Momentum appears to be building around Valve’s highly anticipated Steam Machine, with a new rumor suggesting that official launch details could arrive very soon.

According to X user @HardwareSteam, who claims to have sources familiar with Valve’s plans, the review embargo for the Steam Machine is expected to lift on June 23. If accurate, Valve could use that date to reveal the system’s pricing and release date.

The speculation is based on Valve’s previous hardware launches. When the company introduced the Steam Controller, its review embargo ended on the same day Valve announced the controller’s release date, with the device launching roughly a week later. If Valve follows a similar approach this time, the Steam Machine could arrive around June 30, aligning with the company’s previously announced Summer 2026 launch window.

While the information remains unconfirmed, recent developments surrounding SteamOS have added fuel to the speculation. Valve has released SteamOS 3.8.10, bringing a range of improvements for the Steam Deck and other supported hardware. According to Steam Deck HQ, among the changes are an upgrade to Linux Kernel 6.16, updated graphics drivers, and support for HDMI Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) on devices with native HDMI outputs.

That last addition has drawn particular attention because the upcoming Steam Machine is expected to feature a native HDMI connection. As a result, some observers believe the update is another sign that Valve is preparing its operating system for the launch of its new console-style gaming PC.

The update also expands support for third-party handheld devices. Valve notes improvements for newer AMD and Intel platforms, including support for upcoming Intel-powered handheld gaming systems based on the latest Intel Arc G3 graphics architecture. This suggests SteamOS is continuing its expansion beyond the Steam Deck ecosystem.

Taken together, the SteamOS update and the recent rumors point toward Valve entering the final stages of preparation for its next hardware release. Whether the company chooses June 23, June 29, or another date entirely, official details may not be far away. For now, Valve has yet to confirm any pricing, release date, or launch plans for the Steam Machine, so the information should still be treated as speculation until an official announcement is made.

The most interesting aspect of SteamOS 3.8 isn't necessarily the Steam Machine itself, but the improved support for AMD/Intel hardware and dedicated GPUs. This demonstrates that Valve is building a true Linux gaming ecosystem that extends beyond its own hardware.

Valve seems to have learned from its mistakes: first create a strong ecosystem with the Steam Deck and then launch a salon-style platform. The strategy appears more coherent than in 2015, but everything hinges on the cost-benefit ratio.

Unfortunately, it's arriving too late to the market, with a price that's likely to be far too high to attract a wide range of gamers; we'll have to see how it fares upon release. We'd still prefer SteamOS to replace Windows.

The problem won't be SteamOS, but the price. If the rumors of a price tag exceeding €1000 are confirmed, the Steam Machine risks remaining a niche product. At that price point, many will prefer to build their own gaming PC.

You can feel the buzz around the place. I'm eager to see how the launch goes. Clearly, I'm a customer, but I don't have the funds yet ^^' We'll see if Valve can find its audience. The general public is still more console-oriented, and the elite PC gamer audience remains a minority, but I sincerely believe the Steam Machine will bring in a certain segment of the customer base. Let's see what happens this summer :)
